Title: Authentication error - 535 error
Post by: deboopi on February 03, 2023, 03:30:09 pm
I've been working for a couple of years with Aqua-mail without much problems but now I encounter the following.
Whenever I try to sync my hotmail I get the error as in attachment.
A 535 error outgoing SMTP.
When I remove my account and add it again I get the same in the step  after logging in to my hotmail.
Gmail synchronizes fine, in outlook I can see my hotmail messages without problems

Aquamail broke for me yesterday on 2 phones that are using Outlook accounts. Both are running version 1.42.0-255. This brings back memories of the ongoing Outlook account problem from not so long ago where the app wouldn't receive push email.

Email won't send. The error I'm seeing when the application fails to send is:

Outgoing server login error: 535 5.7.3 Authentication unsuccessful.

Another phone with the same version of Aquamail linked to a Gmail account is not having any send issues.

Looks like I'm back using the Outlook mail app until this is fixed.  :(

Same for me.
I don't have any problems with my gmail account, but my hotmail account keeps getting authentication errors.
I tried deleting my account and signing up once again but no success.

I also have version 1.42.0-255.
I tried with a version 1.41 and I have the same problem, so it must be something else.

Sounds like MS has done something to break it on their end. I'm looking forward to a fix ASAP by the Aquamail devs.

I'm using the Outlook app at the moment it is substandard compared to Aquamail.

I am seeing the same authentication error on my Hotmail account. My outlook account works fine. My Hotmail account also works fine in Fairemail just an issue in Aqua Mail.

With outlooks outage today I thought it was a Microsoft issue and then I saw this community post. I did report it to Microsoft but now that I've confirmed it works elsewhere then I know it an Aqua Mail issue.

Edit: scratch that same error on Fairemail must be an intermittent problem because it didn't happen for me before. Good thing I seldom use this email address

Still waiting here as well. The fixes in the linked article don't fix the problem for me.

Does anyone know when this issue Is going to be fixed? Also this is what I'm getting as well (No accounts for sending mail) so this happens if I'm trying to send an email, or reply to all. Has anyone tried deleting account and then starting a fresh?

Previously posted. I don't believe there are any updates yet. I think it has something to do with the Office365 account option integration. I added my same outlook email address as just a Normal "Email" account. Everything works perfectly fine. I've left my 365 account still in my accounts list with a pending email so I can refresh and check to see if the SMTP send has been fixed. So far it's not been.

They didn't work for me either. I think Microsoft broke something.

I have two-factor authentication on an account with Office365. I deleted the account in AquaMail that was causing the error, but no matter which type of account I selected, I could not set one up that worked in AquaMail.

None of the fixes in the linked article worked for me, either.

I can send no outgoing email through this account using my phone.

Add me to the list of disgruntled users getting this error message with my outlook accounts. It has been going on for a while now.

+1 too. Not happy with how long it is taking to resolve this issue for app I paid to use. I would have thought that 10 days was enough time to get a resolution ... except the problem is from Office 365's end?

Ok,
They should have found a solution by now but I must say the workaround they gave works well.
I'm waiting for a fix but for now I can work again without outlook which I hate.
So keep up the good works ASAP.

My 4 Outlook accounts were never added as Office365 accounts in the first place,

I know many of you are frustrated with this but please do not blame Aqua Mail. This is a Microsoft Outlook problem and they are still unclear on how to fix it. You should be following these complaints with Microsoft. Not only does my Hotmail account not work with aqua mail but it also doesn't work with Fairemail. Microsoft outlooks own Twitter DMed with me and then they want me to follow a support complaint with Outlook support. Who is managing their Twitter page if not outlook support? I go to their Outlook support page which is useless. Can you log in to your Microsoft account, yes. Can you log in at outlook.com, yes and then they act like there is no problem. There are more ways to access your account than that. Then if you try digging further into their support pages they just reference using their app as if that's the only app they can use. All my other Outlook accounts work just fine except for my Hotmail so something strange is going on.

For what it's worth - Aquamail updated for me today to Version 1.42.1-263 from the play store Beta line.  After update, the app required me to re-authenticate my office365 account.  Once that was done, my authentication issues went away.

This appears fixed for me at this time - I will comment back if this reverses course.

OK.
I also installed the beta and the problem is gone.
I won't take too long before this gets released.

So do we still need to wait  or can we somehow get the Beta line.

I have now joined the Beta and updated to the latest beta version (1.42.1-263) and can confim that the auth issue I had (only when sending email from my Hotmail account - receiving was fine) has been fixed! :):)

I made a ticket about this and I got a reply.

We just added a fix for that. Please excuse us for the inconvenience and install the latest Beta version.
To enroll to our beta group, please follow the link:

Please note that you have to re-authenticate your account.
The official release will roll out over the coming days.

Hi, so the Beta line was working great for a few days but now I see that I haven't received an email from 2.00am this morning and when I try to refresh it this comes up. Error checking mail. Folder is missing on the server. BAD user is authenticated but not connected.

Yes.  Same happened with mine on Monday AM at some point.  I've raised a support ticket.  Up until this evening (Wed) my Hotmail account in AM was broken since Monday AM, but my Outlook account was both sending/receiving fine.  Then around 18:30 this eve there was a notification pop-up saying 'Persistent incoming server network errors'.  But same 'Invalid server response' error as the Hotmail account once I'd clicked the red bar in the AM app for the Outlook account.

I did install the outlook app on my 'phone earlier as a test and that authenticated and displayed my Hotmail account with no issues at all once I'd used the auth app for 2FA.

In the advanced settings (View all Outlook Settings - Sync Email) of my outlook.com account I see this:

IMAP setting:
Server name: outlook.office365.com
Port: 993
Encryption method: TLS

SMTP setting:
Server name: smtp.office365.com
Port: 587
Encryption method: STARTTLS

I can input these settings into Mozilla Thunderbird as it has option for SSL/TLS with login authentication method OAuth2.  I believe Microsoft sent me a notification at some point that they were switching to TLS although I don't know how that differs from SSL or STARTTLS.

It looks to me that Aquamail does not support TLS for an IMAP connection.

Edit:  I finally got it to work with "Other E-mail" "Manual Setup" after generating an "App Password" on the Microsoft site and using that as the password for my e-mail address - along with the IMAP/SMTP information that Microsoft provided.

The "Authentication" is set to "Choose Automatically".  Maybe there should be an option for OAuth2 there like with Thunderbird.  Shouldn't need an App Password with OAuth2 so I think there must be something with TLS.

Both my hotmail and outlook accounts are running again.  Looks like it was any 3rd party (to MS) mail app were having IMAP issues:
