Title: Authentication failed - mac.com, iCloud, Apple mail services
Post by: dany901 on March 01, 2013, 04:55:02 pm
Hi. Your app is perfect, but in the last days i have noticed an "Authentication failed" error with my Icloud account continuously, also if i try to insert again the (correct) password and username.

I want to say the apps works greats for 2 months using the said account (nothing is changed in account's settings pannel), so i can't say what is wrong now.

Thx

The awesome thing is the app work also with this error, in other words I'm able to revive the mails with push.

I'm sure the developer will fix this bug, he is a great developer and this is the best mail client for android.

Okay...so it isn't just me.

Have been sitting here for the past 30 minutes trying to figure out why I am getting authentification errors.

I should have come here first.

Just started happening with the new update.   Hopefully it will be fixed immediately.

By the way...is anybody answering these threads anymore?  It seems most of the posts have gone abandoned as far as replies are concerned.

Same here, on an HTC OneX, running Android 4.1.1

iCloud incoming server login error for the last 48 hours.  Interestingly, it worked briefly after the last Android update, and the last Aquamail update, but has now stopped working.  I have emailed the developer.  This is good software, has worked flawlessly for months up till now.  There is a bug somewhere.

Same problem with me.  I have been using this App for the best part of 3 months if not more.  Suddenly getting iCloud error messages for the past 48-72 hrs:

Incoming server login error.

However just like bkerley said, the emails do arrive ok.

Please check and correct.

Hi,

Thank you all for the reports :) There is about a dozen in my mailbox as well, just today, even though the update was released on Feb 25th, a week ago.

The latest update does not have any changes related to IMAP authentication.

I have not had reports of broken IMAP authentication with any other mail service since the update, except occasional glitches (e.g. Gmail's "too may simultaneous sessions", or Yahoo's famous "OFC12" which have nothing to do with the app).

Searching the web I found cases of iCloud authentication failing in the past with other mail apps, for example:

http://www.justanswer.com/mac-computers/6hjwh-getting-authentication-failure-message-when-attempting.html

http://sparrowmail.tenderapp.com/kb/common-issues/icloud-in-sparrow

Suggestions:

- Logging into your @mac.com email on Apple's web site (just in case Apple needs some sort of re-validation)

- Contacting Apple support (just in case Apple's server settings changed)

Has anyone done this?

More:

- Bringing up account setup for the account in AquaMail, and trying to verify the settings -- is there a more detailed error message there?

(there would be, if the server "explains" why authentication failed)

Has anyone done this?

- Creating a debug log capturing this error, as described on my support page: http://www.aqua-mail.com/?page_id=232

Has anyone done this?

I don't have any Apple devices myself, so no @mac.com address. If necessary, I'll go and purchase an i*something just so I can see the error myself...

... but could someone help troubleshoot this issue in a constructive way?

Finally, @NJRonbo -- yes, I try to read these forums, but it takes me several hours a day to respond just to personal email messages about AquaMail... And then, I have a to-do list about 6 pages long, which also needs my attention...

I'll be posting updates here as I get more information.

Just found out this:

My app's preset for @me.com uses "imap.mail.me.com" (taken from Apple's help page (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4864)), but I can see that the standard Android Email app (and K-9) use "mail.me.com" (without the leading "imap.").

Same with "smtp.mail.me.com" vs. "smtp.me.com" in the standard Email app (and K-9).

Could someone try this in my app?

- Server name: "mail.me.com"
- Security: "SSL (strict)" or "SSL (accept any)" if you get a cert error
- Port: 993

For outgoing, "smtp.me.com", TLS, port 587.

( btw, nslookup gives very different IPs for "imap.mail.me.com" vs. "mail.me.com"... and "smtp.mail.me.com" vs. "smtp.me.com" )

Just found this, Sparrow and Mac Mail are also affected today.

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1550517

My app reports all errors, I believe in keeping the user informed. Have not used stock Email for a while, but K9, which is based on it, does not.

I have been using this app with my icloud and gmail account for months and it works great up until the last update. I am now getting the same problem as the others have mentioned here.

I have tried several different ways of configuring the settings and it fails every time. I have searched the forums as well. I tried setting up my icloud account in the native Samsung email app and it works perfectly. Something happened with the latest update to cause it to break in Aquamail.

I believe I have a solution for this but if it doesn't work for you sorry  :-[.

According to the support document from Apple the username should be in the format of "example at me.com", but from looking at my Apple Mail its just "example".

So I've changed the login details and removed the  at me.com part.

I've tried that on both Nexus 7 and Nexus 4 and had 0 issues from last night(when I changed the login details). Ie zero authentication failure issues. Both for background and imap push settings.

I really don't know why this is happening, as the default email works(only tried it a couple times so I could be lucky) but when I was trying to find a solution both K9 and Aqua Mail users have been reporting this issue.

It might be an Apple stuff up(of course apple would blame everyone but themselves), and it might be fixed, so the above solution might not work in the future. But for now it works.

Thank you johnsof, I actually got access to a @me.com account today, will run some tests, and post the results.

But it seems Apple's mail system is lately messed up in more ways than one:

Randomly, silently, filtering out people's mail:

http://arstechnica.com/apple/2013/02/icloud-e-mail-censorship-thanks-to-overzealous-spam-filtering/

A ten-hour outage on Feb 28:

http://macdailynews.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/130301_icloud_outage1.png

Is the failing authenticaitons a result of the outage? I can only make guesses, of course.

This very well could be an Apple situation, but curiously the problem started at the exact time Aqua Mail was updated.

So, it's very hard to put the blame on Apple, but I am not going to rule it out.

In fact....now that I think more about this....

I use the same settings on my Mac and there are no authentification errors coming from that end.  This makes me think it is an Aqua Mail issue.

I would blame Apple because the issue started on the 28th of Feb (I know because I got my nexus 4 on that date)  and set it up with the same setting from my nexus 7(via a back up and restore). Last update for Aqua Mail was on the 24th. Had no issues till the 28th.

Also other people with other email clients are having the same issue with the apple servers.

On your mac open the preferences on your Apple mail and under the icloud settings you should see that's it's only using the user name and not the at me.com part.  Well it does for me anyway.

The fix for me was to remove the at me .com part and it worked.

Also the failure was intermittent which kinda points away from any client.

Johnsof,

You are correct.

Removing the @mac.com or @me.com and just using the username solo solved the problem.

Thank You

Hi all just joined the forum for this specific problem as I too have the same issue with accessing Macmail. Tried the last suggestion about removing from the login ID (under manual setup) the domain name, @mac.com. It seems to have worked so far.  :D

I got access to a @me.com account a few hours ago, and here is my analysis.

Apple's iCloud IMAP servers support two authentication methods (advertised via IMAP's CAPABILITY command): SASL PLAIN and the default IMAP method.

My app, when seeing this, chooses the more sophisticated SASL PLAIN. Since the iCloud outage on Feb 28 (maybe before, too?), this method no longer accepts full email as the login name.

Changing the login in my app's account setup from "user@me.com" to just "user" is one workaround (thank you again, @johnsof).

The stock Android Email app does not support SASL PLAIN, only the default IMAP authentication method, which continues to work either way: with and without the @me.com / @mac.com part.

As for the discrepancy between Mac Mail and Apple's own help page, "isn't it ironic, don't you think"?

@NJRonbo, @yaps - thank you for confirming that the "remove domain name" workaround is working for you, too.

I'll be adding a kludge in the app's authentication code for this, and releasing an update, since not everyone who's ran into the issue will see this discussion.

Here is a version with workarounds for @me.com / @mac.com:

http://www.aqua-mail.com/download/AquaMail-market-1.2.2.18.apk

1 - For new accounts, the app's preset now uses just the "bare" user name, like Mac Mail does.

2 - For existing accounts, authenticating with full email as the login will not use SASL PLAIN.

This allows new and existing accounts to just work, without any "manual" adjustments.

Thank you Johnsof  and Kostya for the work-around.  It worked to resolve my problem too.  Funny coincidence with the Apple outage and the update...
