Title: Badge count only shows maximum of 6 new messages.
Post by: Boothy on January 23, 2020, 11:57:02 am
Hi,
I recently noticed the icon badge count never exceeds 6 on both mine and my wife's Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 (both running android 9) even when there are many more new unread emails.

Aqua Mail settings -> message notifications -> enable “Smart Watch enhancements” = enabled.

Is there anything I might do myself to fix this please? Cache cleared, but not done that for data as yet.

Thanks.

Same here since a long time ago.
I don't even hope for a fix though :(

Glad it's not just me, as I'd copied settings over on the installs and wondered if it was something I'd done.

Hi,

There are two settings to check / adjust before this works.

1 – Phone settings -> Apps -> Aqua Mail -> Notifications -> enable “Show badge”.

This however will only trigger on single-message notification, so you’ll have either nothing or a “1” on the badge.

To make it work for multiple-message notifications, please:

2 – Aqua Mail settings -> message notifications -> enable “Smart Watch enhancements”.

This also changes how on-phone notifications look. You’ll be able to expand (swipe down) on a notification that’s “about” more than one message, turning into individual “cards”, one per message, each with its own action buttons (mark read and so on).

This “enhanced” notification style – which first appeared in Android 7.0 – works with the new Samsung badge feature as expected, even when there are multiple unread messages.

There are two other possible workarounds:
- Using Aqua Mail's message counter widget.
- Using a launcher where the "badge" feature is officially supported. Aqua Mail works with: Apex Launcher Pro, Tesla Launcher Prime + Tesla Unread, Smart Launcher.

Hi Nedialko Kondev,
Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, the settings you mentioned were activated already. I wondered why something had changed, as the badge count was correct in the past on the same device(s). I'd hoped for a fix without the need to install more apps / launchers.
Cheers.

Hi,

I also have the "Smart watch enhancement" activated.
Samsung Galaxy S9+ here, official Android 10. On Android 9, everything was the same with this counter.
And yes, I do remember that the badge used to work correctly some time ago.
And the widget is not an option, as I keep the icon in my "tray".

Hi,

We were able to reproduce it only on Samsung devices.
Is this the case for you as well?

Thanks,
Anton.

Hi,

I'm one of the developers working on the issue and so far I was able to reproduce it only on Samsung, but I'll see if I can test on a Xiaomi as well.

Thanks,
Anton.

Could you try disabling option :

AquaMail -> Settings -> Message Notifications -> Smart watch enhancements

It seems to show me the correct number for Samsung when I disable this option.

Could you try if this works for you?

I don't think there is another workaround for showing the correct number, which you can apply at the moment.

I'm looking for a software fix, which is going to take some time.

Hi Anton,
I just checked again, and this was already disabled unfortunately.

I can't see that there's been a recent update yet, but -
On starting up my Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 this morning, I saw there were 38 unread messages !!! First time I'd seen this in a while.

If nothing has been updated, then I can only think that while checking & re-checking my AquaMail settings check-boxes, that when I've disabled & re-enabled (back again), certain settings have been "fixed" ??

Inside Settings / Recent ("settings you changed recently") .... here are the items I've "reset" by clicking off/on again.

Message notifications - Notify about - All unread / re-enabled

Smart watch enhancements - / re-disabled
Android 7+, Android Wear, Pebble, Garmin, Samsung Gear

Notify about ongoing operations   - / re-disabled
Progress notifications for loading of messages/attachments and sending messages

My wife's Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 still has only 6 on the icon badge (she has plenty more unread, than 6). I might do the same on her tablet and enable / disable etc, to see if it fixes her issue too.

Having sent a number of emails from another device back to my Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 - I see the counter has changed appropriately on the AquaMail icon.

I had a go on my wife's Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 .... checking / un-checking / ( & vice-versa) the boxes I mentioned above .... and her badge counter is now displaying correct unread messages (all 126 of them 😂).

So whatever caused the issue, appears to be corrected using the check-box re-do method. Not sure if others who've experienced this have copied over their settings from a previous backup? I wonder whether that might have anything to do with it, as I'd carried over settings to both devices from a backup I'd saved when I'd set up everything how I'd wanted it.

Has anyone else managed to correct the badge count with the above method?

Sorry about my silence. So far, i still haven't received more than 6 messages at once :) So, can't reproduce or confirm yet.

OK thanks, Dmitry.
Everything is working fine on our devices now, since I selected / de-selected the check-boxes. 👍

I just asked my colleague to send me a bunch of emails. She sent 8.
The badge still showed 6! :(
And yes, i did follow your advice a couple of days ago and unchecked/rechecked all those options.

Thanks. Still shows 6 :(

PS: Wait! I unchecked the Smartwatch enhancement, and the counter now works!

PPS: Now I don't get any notifications on my Samsung Gear S3 Frontier.
