Title: L G Style watch does work with Aquamail
Post by: tonygamble on November 04, 2018, 03:19:41 pm
I wanted to test if a smart watch attached to my Samsung phone would be an advantage.

The neatest I could find was the L G Style. It is noticeably thinner than the Samsungs and anything else I could spot. There used to be a Pebble but that is no longer made or supported.

As it was a test I bought a used Style on eBay.

It took quite a struggle to set up but I think my main problem is that it had been put back to the factory setting by the vendor (to remove any personal data) and I don't think that factory default is a real operating system. I found an 'update' in the Settings menu and it took over half an hour to download and install whatever it needed.

There is also a Bluetooth on/offf toggle and this needs to be turned on so the watch can see the phone.

You need to install Wear OS on the phone. This is the new name for Android Wear.

There is a setting within Aquamail where you ask it to 'notify' smart watches.

From what I remember that is about it.

Now my watch notifies me of any incoming emails, texts or phone calls. As this is a relatively simple and small smart watch there is not much more you can do. With the Samsung you can be like James Bond and carry on a conversation with the watch - but until they reduce the size of those machines I am happy to have a wrist watch, not unlike the battery watch I wear for sports, and be able to take a quick look at what my phone says it has just received.

There are still a few L G Styles on the UK eBay for less than £50 - so if anyone wants a low cost test at least they know they will buy something that 'works'.

Yeah, thanks.

It's Aqua Mail settings -> Message notifications -> "Smart Watch enhancements".

For watches that are compatible with Wear OS (nee Android Wear) - this app:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.wearable.app

For Samsung watches that use a different, Samsung specific technology, it's this one:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.samsung.android.app.watchmanager

Someone else emailed me today that this (Samsung app + Aqua Mail settings) worked for Gear 3 model.

Bumping this thread as I had a struggle this morning because my phone was not telling my watch that Aquamail had new messages.

I am not sure how it had got changed by the 'Change Watch Notifications' setting in Wear OS on the phone had moved Aquamail from the approved section to the list of apps that will not notify the watch.

I certainly did not change it - but some software update malfunction must have done.

Any suggestions as to the cause will naturally be of interest and hopefully stop it happening again.
