Title: Version 1.17.0-1194-dev - "work in progress" - not in Google Play
Post by: Kostya Vasilyev on July 21, 2018, 12:22:34 am
https://www.aqua-mail.com/download/AquaMail-market-1.17.0-1194-dev-617d87abc4dd.apk

---

+ Dark theme + "pure black" option -> account / folder backgrounds are pure black not gray

+ Office 365: support for logging in with InTune (Microsoft Corporate Portal)

+ Internal changes to message view that *may* (or may not) fix "overlapping lines of text" on some Xiaomi and Huawei devices (we are not able to reproduce on our phones)

---

---

* InTune - Microsoft Corporate Portal - Корпоративный портал

Thanks for the update that brings back the pure black background - for the most part, that is.
I am glad that you listen at least to the negative ratings in Play Store. But, since you did that, could you also take out the grey color on the Smart Folder?  I still don't understand who thought that forcing grey when you select black is a good idea.

@kostas77
Could you please provide screenshots?

For me, the theme (dark, incl. messages) with 'pure dark' options, is really black also in Smart Folder.

This is what I mean. Not the Smart folder itself ( that is black indeed), but the Smart folder "tile" in the accounts list.

mmh.
I can adjust the color to 'pure' black:

long press on the card 'Smart Folder' > Assign colour > Exact > Hex value = 000000

Re: I can adjust the color to 'pure' black:

I think he's saying that the "button-like fill" on the smart folder item should change to black too - when "pure black" is turned on.

Because that small patch of gray is really going to destroy the battery :)

I'm pretty sure it's actually more a design issue...

Yeah that too, sure. That small gray button-like area is shockingly ugly.

@mikeone: Thanks for the tip; this works just fine.
@Kostya, I apologise  beforehand if I misunderstood, but your replies seem a bit sarcastic to me. All I have been asking for, is consistency and the option to choose our own background colour and not forcing a questionable designer decision upon us. Your app used to be all about that, i.e. options for the user in the past. I'm not sure the new ownership respects that.
Sorry for the off-topic.

No, not really. It's just Kostya's 'specific' humor. You can believe me, I know him since years (Although only here in the forum in countless discussions, but still ...)  8)

No not joking. I now really resent made this (pure black fill for accounts / folders) change.

I thought it was a improvement and it would be welcome - but apparently it's not and it wasn't. Silly me.

Kostya, i really respect you a lot for this app that you have created. I don't understand what you mean though; what was not welcome (at least by me) was the previous change that introduced the grey background.
I am very thankful for bringing the pure black back again. Where did I say that it's not welcome? I just wanted to get rid of the small grey area left, and @mikeone showed me how. (By the way, I couldn't care less for battery efficiency; it's more aesthetics to me).

Therefore, the 'grey background issue' is gone - since your recent change (pure black fill for accounts/ folders). This was indeed an improvement for all users who are preferring the Dark theme with 'pure black' option. So, no reason to be upset.

The only remaining issue was the gray background on the "Smart Folder" card: This has to be / can changed from the user himself by adjusting the color manually to pure black (hex value: 000000).

@Kostya Isn't that completely normal when you develop a complex product for thousands of users?

If 999 users find a change good or maybe don't notice it at all and if 1 user doesn't like it, then one will rather read the comment of this one user in the forum.

AquaMail is much more than 'good enough'. I think what you want to say is - nothing is ever perfect. There will always be room for improvement and always some users unsatisfied.
I rarely buy apps but I am glad that I invested in AquaMail - I was actually very happy (and still am) with the grey shade.
Kostya - you have to understand that a lot of users of your app are choosing to use your app because they are 'picky' and AquaMail offers most customisations/options (in addition to doing its job of getting emails perfectly).
You should take these comments as compliments. If AquaMail becomes 'perfect' - then WHAT WILL YOU DO?
Respect and Regards
Happy AquaMail customer who is planning to do a presentation in my organisation on how to stay on top of emails - will be recommending AquaMail.

Re: My good report was a bit premature. I still experience the issue, but with less frequency than before.

We don't have any new info on this one.

It's mostly (by vast margin) Xiaomi devices.

It also started between our updates (between 1.15 and 1.16). Points to a Google change - maybe WebView / Chrome update?

Also we don't actually render the content - we prepare a piece of HTML code and "feed" that to WebView / Chrome inside our app, which then do the actual rendering.

I know it doesn't help least bit - would like to fix this but so far can't even reproduce on any of my phones. The QA department can't either.

I am testing this build, the InTune is still not working for me. It said the devices must be managed (I suppose it mean the Android administrator). It provides a register button and that button redirects me to company portal download page.

Do you have InTune app installed and your account configured there?

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microsoft.windowsintune.companyportal

Then on the Aqua Mail account setup screens -

1 - please choose "Office 365" as account type

2 - there will be a blue panel near the top labeled "Log in with Company Portal"

3 - tap this panel to actually log in

Sorry I don't follow.

Your screenshots show an app which is not Aqua Mail and not InTune Company Portal app.

What app is that? Whose title bar says "Active Directory"?

Here is how this screen works for me.

1 - Add Account -> Office 365 account type -> Aqua Mail shows "please log in" window

2 - There is a blue panel along the top saying "Log in with Company Portal".

3 - Tap that *without* signing into the login form below -> taken into InTune Company Portal App

4 - The screen in InTune is labeled "Pick Account" -> tap the account -> taken back into Aqua Mail

5 - The "please log in" window in Aqua Mail closes, picking up the email and user name. Back to "almost done" screen in account setup flow ready to save the account.

Thanks for the log.

Yes you do have InTune Corporate Portal app installed.

And we do call it to pick an account.

So OK after *you* tap "Log in with Company Portal" - you get the window in this attachment (this is yours too) or is there something before that?

Do you see your "list" (= 1 presumably) account and tap on that? And then you get this error screen?

Thanks.

And you sign in here - and get the message about "device required to be managed" ???

Weird! Because that *is* the InTune app which is the "thing" that is supposed to "manage" your phone.

If you run Company Portal app on its own - is your account already there?

According to your log it's same app - but 1) styled differently 2) won't let Aqua Mail log in :)

Do you see your account in the corporate app - if you choose "My Profile" from its three dots menu?

Re: Besides, I am using Android Pie. Not sure if it is related.

Could be, I don't know. Maybe InTune app has an issue with that?

I just know that - and see from the log - that we do "ask" the InTune app to "let the user pick an account and return its info back to us" - and instead it's asking you to sign in, as if your corporate account did not already exist there.

1 - Can you try this app, would it work?

This uses Microsoft's Official Library That Works With InTune (tm) called ADAL

https://www.aqua-mail.com/download/Office365Login-app-release.apk

Just to get an additional data point.

When you run this app it will try to log you in.

I just need a "did it work or not" - yes / no - and if it fails too, would it fail the same way as Aqua.

2 - Can you try rebooting the phone just in case?

In my experience InTune app is "finicky" :) putting it mildly.

Re: Hmm.. Your demo app does work for me and show the "Pick account" page. Without any reboot.

OK thanks this is useful.

The ADAL library didn't fit into our existing code structure - so we use the relevant "bits and pieces" of its code in our app.

I'll have to review for any differences, will post when I have news.

Re: Great! Thank you!

And just to be clear about the sample app:

- You started it

- It showed a progress window, briefly (maybe too briefly to even see it)

- And then took you into InTune app and you were at the Pick Accounts screen there (and tapping an account worked, took you back into the sample app and showed account info).

----

Can you still try to reboot the phone and then try Aqua again?

Android keeps some "interaction history" per app, rebooting will clear that.

@lijunle

I added debug logging to the sample app - which as we know works with your account on your phone.

The idea is to see what the sample app does *on your phone* which makes it work (I don't see any differences between your Aqua Mail log vs. sample app on my phone).

https://www.aqua-mail.com/download/Office365Login-app-release-2.apk

First time you run it - it will prompt for a permission to access storage. This is necessary so it can write to a log file.

Please grant the permission - and then the app will initiate a login, same as before.

The log file is called log-Office365Login.txt - you can post here (it doesn't contain any personal info) or email to me at kmansoft / at / gmail.

Thanks again for your help and sorry for the trouble.

Re: Here is the log. Not sure if it helps.

Yes it does. A lot. Thanks!

You were right all along - it was a different app.

Aqua Mail at this point looks for this one, InTune Company Portal:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microsoft.windowsintune.companyportal

and on your phone this app is present but trying to log in - fails.

The sample app recognizes this one too:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.azure.authenticator

I'll have a new build for you in a few hours.

Thanks! Not the least - for the debug logs and your patience.

Re: One interesting part, it is showing "Log in with authenticator" now.

Yep :)

Our app now knows that - your accounts are in the Authenticator app and not the Company Portal app (on your phone, it checks for both and resolves to Authenticator... but for others it will still find Company Portal too).

Thanks for all great work on this app  - paid user from 2013 here.
Just have one issue here after my company upgraded its mail policy to restrict android mobile device clients.
Now, whenever I try to logon and authenticate via AquaMail latest version posted here to my Office365 mailbox the server recognizes that I'm not using only preferred by the company Outlook for Android app and kicks me out showing that AquaMail is not allowed by the server. is there a specific way to spoof the client connection string changing it to Outlook while connecting to office365 account (maybe a checkbox for enabling agent spoof?)

@vlad

Do you mean your company uses InTune?

Or does it only allow Outlook?

- For InTune - the latest InTune enabled version is this:

- User Agent can be changed on the account setup screen if you tap Manual

However if you also use OAUTH2 - then the server knows "who" (what app) it is talking to, not just based on user agent (which is easy to change) but also based on OAUTH2 client ID.

It's like - when you go to "my account" in Office 365 and look under "apps with access to my account" - you'll have specific apps listed, "it knows". Same thing is possible for restricting access I suppose.

More broadly speaking - if your IT Department decides to do something, they have all kinds of tools and knobs and switches on their end to enforce this, so you may or may not be able to go against their polices.

( and if you do succeed but get found out and it becomes a problem - it's entirely between you and the employer )

Many thanks for the fast reply Kostya - really appreciated!
Company changed authentication to OAUTH2 and the Client ID is the problem - it imply refuses to grant access to Aqua Mail...
So - it appears nothing can be done to trick it somehow... sad...
