Title: Adaptive icon
Post by: jcasares on November 19, 2017, 09:37:23 pm
Can we have the old icon back in Oreo?
The white envelope over white background is not nice.

Where are you getting "white icon over white background"?

What does this have to do with Android 8?

A screenshot would be great.

In the desktop and app drawer.

It started to happen after my OS updated to Oreo (8.0).

Attached an image on how it's shown.

Nexus 5x with Android 8.1 (beta).

Seems that your device manufacturer is too aggressive about applying round icons.

To answer your question - yes we're planning to support adaptive icons, the artwork is done, but:

At this point it's a tools issue.

To do this we'd need to switch to latest version of development tools (Android Studio 3.0) which just went "stable" a couple of weeks ago.

Since it's still a new version, we're most likely not going to switch in this dev cycle, giving it more time to stabilize in case there are issues.

Strange, Aquamail is the only third party app with this behaviour. None other besides the known Google apps are shown like this.

I'm using a OnePlus 3T and tried both own launcher and Nova 5.5.1

Regards.

Re: I'm using a OnePlus 3T

Strange, One Plus is the only company that messes up their Android time after time.

PS - 1:

Aqua's icon is just a bitmap with transparency. Technology from Android 1.6.

Why OnePlus launcher decided to render it like that - you'd have to ask them.

Now, they're all over the place. Squirles, non-squirles, unique shapes, everything.
If this was their way to do consistent icons, how come they're so much more inconsistent now?

And you can see that in my Nexus 5x screenshot :)

But I'll repeat - we are going to add an adaptive icon for 8.0, but the timeframe isn't clear, it's a tools issue.

It's not OnePlus launcher as I'm using a third party now (Nova) and does the same.

I know the mess was created by Google deploying a technology that wasn't that good to start with.

What I wondered is why from 80+ applications I have only one that was affected besides the ones by Google themselves that everyone already know (YouTube, Play Store, Home, etc).

Regards.

Attached a screenshot that shows that the unlocker doesn't have that issue.

Found it I think.

Turns out we do have a round icon (not *adaptive*, just *round*) in Aqua Mail but not in the unlockers.

I'll file an issue for the project manager / designer to look at this.

I have the exact same setup: Oneplus 3T, using Nove Launcher. And I have the same issue with the icon. And also ONLY with the Aqua Mail icon. And it' s also round with the Oneplus launcher.
I have this since a few days, and I'm pretty sure that there was no Oneplus update recently.

Just now I have manually upgraded to Oreo and the issue stayed the same. So it was there in Mashmallow as well as it is now in Oreo. If that helps in any way.

Sorry for the confusion I caused above - but the original question was about *adaptive*, so my thoughts initially went in that direction.

+ Removed round icon (Android 8.0+, Nova Launcher, etc.) looks bad
