Title: Aqua "Share" via Google Drive Not Working
Post by: BigbirdPhila on July 10, 2017, 05:00:21 am
Samsung Galaxy S3 w/Android 4.4.2, running AquaMail Pro version 1.10.0-403.

I select an email containing photos from my "Sent" directory (if that matters).  The three vertical dot menu gives me a choice to "Share".  I then select "Drive" from the "Send to .." screen.  The "Upload to Drive" screen gives me a proposed document title (the name of the file), my account name (I'm logged in), and a folder name (My Drive).  I leave all of these unchange and hit "OK".

I get a brief popup saying "1 file is being prepared for upload" and then another brief popup saying "Your 1 file is being uploaded to: "My Drive" ".  I don't know who is producing these popups -- Android or Aqua.

No error message is produced, but if I go to my notifications screen I see "1 File Failed to upload".  If I press on that notification, I see the file name with a thumbnail and the text "Incomplete upload".

If I start the Drive app, I see the file name with a thumbnail and the text "Modified HH:MM".  No error message.

If I go to my computer and go to Google->Drive with my browser, the files are not there.

I've tried this with multiple files for multiple times.  All files fail to upload and produce no error message (except for the notification window if you happen to go to check -- no audible alert).

Is this a 4.4.2 problem, a Google Drive problem, or an Aqua problem?  Does Aqua hand this off to an Android service, which asynchronously does it?  I guess Aqua can then keep running without waiting for the (possibly very large) file to upload, but then we're at the mercy of the Android error reporting (which seems a bit sparse).

Can someone try this on their phone?

This comes from Google Drive.

Are you able to tap and open this attachment? If so, then the file is there, and is getting handed off to Google Drive.

FWIW, I just tried it and it worked, but - a device with 6.0 (*should not* matter), a message in Inbox, and a Sent message.

Can you please try this with an incoming (not sent) message and follow up here?

I just tried it again with a "sent" message.  Same problem.  So, it is not an isolated problem they were having when I tried it a couple days ago.

Also, just tried it with a message from my "inbox".  Same problem.

So, I guess we can say it's OS-dependent?  Broken with 4.4.2 but works somewhere on the way to 6.0?

4.4.* has some limitations for apps storing to and reading from the external storage. I don't know if there are some similar limitations with respect to the cloud-storage drives...

Forgot to answer that question.  Yes, I can view them.  They're on the phone.  Both the one in the "Sent" folder and the one in the "Inbox" in the test that I performed above.

Um, well, if you're able to view them - then they're there.

And since you're seeing "stuff" from Drive -- starting with "preparing to upload" -- then we know that Drive does receive the file from Aqua.

Unfortunately I have no way to know what's behind that "Incomplete upload" error.

And then this doesn't make it any more clear:

---
If I start the Drive app, I see the file name with a thumbnail and the text "Modified HH:MM".  No error message.

If I go to my computer and go to Google->Drive with my browser, the files are not there.
---

So it seems that Drive is able to access the attachment - "overall" - but runs into some sort of error, and we don't know what this is.

Typical Android/Unix-type error reporting and recovery.  Works fine when nothing bad happens, but when it does the error reporting is abysmal.  I think the politically correct words are "it fails silently".  That's why I like Aqua so much -- works great when nothing bad happens and, when something bad does, reports it to the best of its ability and recovers.  A thorough design.

OK.  Just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong.  I will avoid that "feature" in the future and look for work-arounds.

Ok.  It dawned on me I never checked the version of the Drive app I was using.  Turned out to be an old version.  I just downloaded the current version from the Google Play Store.  Works fine now.

Android error reporting still stinks, though.

Thanks for everyone's help.
