I'm now seeing REPLY in Android 6.0 (but there's no setting to remove that, and no action).

Yes. App settings -> message notifications -> actions ->
- on 7.0, there is a "reply" item and you can turn it off.
- on 6.0 and below, the "reply" won't appear on the phone anymore, fixed in 1.7.1-92
