Title: What does this mean??

What does it mean when there is a small question mark on the contact color chip that has a letter for the contact name on it?  I have done a search and have not seen this asked yet.

It means you'd enabled app settings -> contacts -> indicate unknown.

The question mark means the sender is not in your phone's Contacts.
