Title: Smart folder->New icons for each email account
Post by: serializer on May 04, 2016, 09:26:43 am
How can I revert it back to the old email account list instead of the icon like (S) (B) etc. Thanks

You will find the settings for the "Contact icons" in the the menu:
> Settings > Message list > scroll down to the following items ...

enable / disable:
• "Show sender contact images"
• "Round contact images"
• "Colour chips"

The last one should be what you are looking for.

Sorry, but this is not what you are looking at. I am talking about new features since yesterday. It is not about sender but by account list.

For some reason I cannot see this anymore but what happened that in top of "Smart folder" I got those chips for my Accounts (not senders). So I have 5 accounts and I got one chip for each account. Very irritating view.

Re: old email account list instead of the icon like (S) (B) etc. Thanks

I assume you're asking about the difference in the screenshots?

One (the list of accounts and folders) is a whole "screen" in the app.

The other (just the icons, color letters, with unread counts if there are unread messages) is in the side panel if you swipe it in while on the message list screen.

Two completely different things. Not aware of any changes there lately. Could you try to rephrase the question?

How do I get these account icons different for each account? Mine are all the same for 3 accounts like on the attached image.

As for the chips, - you can give a name to (rename) each account. If those names are starting from different letters, - the chips are different.
Long press on the account in the account list view.  -> "Rename the account" ->
"Account name: ..." - change to what you want it to be called. By default, this is your account address. If you change it, it will not affect your address, this is only how the account shows up on this list view (and affects the chips).

BTW: Thanks to @StR for the detailed description above.  8)

Thanks mikeone,

I saw SR's post before but it doesn't work - the icons remain the same. Any other ideas?
I'm using latest Am on marshmallow.

Those are Hotmail "placeholder" images.

Unfortunately Hotmail does not tell the app that "there is an image, but it's a placeholder", and so AquaMail shows those, not knowing that they're really "images that mean an absence of an image".

The only way to change those is in Hotmail:

Quote
1. Log in your account at https://profile.live.com.
2. On the left hand side, click Change picture.
3. Click Browse... then choose the picture from your computer.
4. Wait for it to load then click Save.

After you've made the change there, please long press an account in AquaMail (on the app's main screen) -> account setup -> Next.

This will clear the app's "cache" and it will fetch the updated image on next mail check.

Without the "account setup" step, AquaMail does this every 24 hours while checking mail.

Thanks Kostya,

I've never been using Hotmail, all my accounts are Gmail.
What to do in this case?

In Hotmail (Outlook) webmail interface, add a picture to your account.
Remove your Hotmail account in AquaMail, then add it again.

Thanks Paris Geek,

Does this procedure apply to Gmail as well?

If yes, is there any other way to do it? I'd like to not to lose all the settings of 3 accounts.

Thanks Paris Geek,

It worked out OK. Now I can see the different chips for different accounts.

But I was also hoping that the account chips will be visible as avatars/Contact images in the Message list and in the Message view. I've sent a test message from one of my accounts to the others and the avatars are still visible as colour chips and not the images that I set previously as the account images.

Did I miss something under the settings somewhere?

So the avatars of the senders in the Message list will be visible first when they will do what I have done - when they upload their images to their email accounts?

As far as I understand: No.
Aquamail only shows whichever avatars are saved in your system "Contacts" (or "People").
So, whichever images you save for your correspondents there will be shown.

Yes Str, that's correct what you are saying.

Re: Aquamail only shows whichever avatars are saved in your system "Contacts" (or "People").

Correct. The only thing it can do.

There isn't an "open" (available to anyone) capability to collect an arbitrary email's avatar, even just from Google, guess they consider this a privacy problem.

I think there is a mail app or two or three that can show other people's images, but I don't know if:

- they were able to work something out with Google (maybe someone plays golf or goes clubbing with someone)

- or if they do the collection themselves (which would mean they "report" your image to their servers, for their app to use on other people's devices... privacy again).

That's essentially what Viber does with both avatars and phone numbers. And I agree with you about privacy issues. But then (I am thinking out loud), if the avatar is taken from the public Google profile (G+?), is that a problem? Maybe that discloses the link between the Gmail e-mail address and the G+ profile in those cases where the user disallows finding G+ profile using Gmail address (I believe there was such an option). Or, maybe I am wrong, and there is a unique [even if obscure] link between the Gmail address and G+ profile?

(And, as far as I understand, a bunch of phone-call blocking apps collect a database of "good" phones by compiling subscribers' own phones, and [I am guessing here] possibly harvesting those from the subscribers' "Contacts"?)

This is the API:

https://developers.google.com/+/web/api/rest/latest/people/get

You can pass "me" as the UserID, and get "the authenticated user's information" -- but this requires 1) authentication, and that requires that 2) the user grants (to the app in question) the OAUTH2 permission to "access profile info".

This is what AquaMail does to fetch the user's own profile when you add a "Gmail account" into the app.

To access info for "some other", you'd need to pass in that user's UserID, and they are not "just emails". And there is some sort of auth too.

And besides --

If auth (OAUTH2 scope grant) is required to access "the authenticated user's info" -- granted by the user him/herself -- then wouldn't accessing info about "someone else" require auth and a permission grant from that "someone else"?

Thank you, Kostya for sharing that information.

There is also an "informal" (ad-hoc) method that can work in some (many?) cases when a public G+ exists. (Given that Gmail has been trying to promote First.Last@gmail.com addresses for quite a while, the likelihood of this working is quite high.)

If I know your name (and especially if your Gmail address is First.Last @ G), I can guess that your G+ plus page is https://plus.google.com/+KostyaVasilyev, and therefore your public avatar is https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-BxvMuKnHgP4/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAABYk/qK1tgdWs3kE/s60-p-no/photo.jpg
or the actual photo is:
 https://plus.google.com/photos/111661559774274998746/albums/profile/6021742976271800690

My point was that in this case, there shouldn't be a privacy issue.
(For the record: I am not suggesting doing anything like that. It is purely an "academic" discussion.)

Re: If I know your name (and especially if your Gmail address is First.Last @ G), I can guess that your G+ plus page is https://plus.google.com/+KostyaVasilyev

Yes, but https://plus.google.com/+something@gmail doesn't work.

Re: and therefore your public avatar is ...

From scraping the web page? Sure, for purely academic purposes it could be done.

Re: privacy issue(s)

I only mentioned "possible privacy issues" as a conjecture about why Google does not appear to provide an API to get the profile image (or name for that matter) of an arbitrary @gmail address.

It's them who see it as a privacy issue (apparently), not me...
