Title: Samsung Galaxy battery usage
Post by: amirage on July 18, 2015, 03:17:10 pm
Hi all,

I had installed Aquamail yesterday and have had the app running since. Today, Samsung's built Smart Manager says that Aquamail is the culprit for abnormal battery drain. I have 3 email accounts (2 push enabled {for only inbox and sent folders} gmail accounts and 1 outlook account which is pull interval of 6 hours)

Can someone please explain why Aquamail is at a high usage level? Battery stats show that it's accounting for 4% of the total up-time.

Any suggestions will be really helpful

Amit

Possible that Samsung is getting jealous that I'm using an app that's much better than the crap that comes preinstalled on the phone.  :o

Just an update the battery usage has reached 7% for aqua. The phone has been on for about 12 hrs and with aquamail accounting for 7% of the battery drain...I'm not sure if this is something I need to be worried about or should I just wait it out and assume the app will settle down sooner if not later...

Btw, thanks for the link...I'm not so hopeful on Android M. I think we are seeing a turn of tables here where iOS is becoming more battery efficient with every new update while Android seems to be walking the other way...

Ok..I think it's time to get worried...Aquamail now accounts for 10% of the battery drain! How's it for everybody else?

Ok...I think I have found out the reason...https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=165558

Stupid Android 5.1.1...Here's a trend I see...Google releases a "great" update...it breaks more than it fixes..then it releases another update to amend the issues and guess what it's utter garbage...by then the next iteration of Android is out with a whole slew of new bugs...

It's like this:

New version...bugs...update..even more bugs...another update...phone rendered useless...New version...bigger bugs...update...larger bugs...New Version....

Come on Google...We are not asking you to release an update or a new version of Android every 3 months...For once you could take a leaf out of iOS' book... >:( >:(

Mark my words...Android M is going to be a disaster for every OEM except for the Nexus devices...

Yes, that's the bug report. There is a comment or two -- and a sample app -- by someone called "kmansoft@g..." near the top.

Android 5.0 is disaster enough already.

And the Nexus devices are not immune from this issue either.

I have 5.0.1 in my Note 4, no problems with Aquamail, in general the battery drains a little more than KitKat, but acceptable with this high capacity device.

Yes, not every phone with 5.0 or above has this issue.

But when it's there, it's really really bad.

I think the problems can be squarely placed on the 5.1.1...Frankly, I prefer Kitkat anyday to Lollipop (pun intended)...It seems every new flavour of Android is step backwards while every new iteration of iOS is just better than the last...

D-oh...this had to happen just when I dumped my iPhone for S6E...

Not 5.1.1 -- this started in 5.0.

And according to the discussion at that bug report, not fixed in the current "M preview" (Android 6.0, in development).

The irony is -- 4.4, 5.0, and then 6.0 have all this new stuff to make battery use more efficient, with 6.0 actually going too far (severely limiting apps running in the background) -- and then we have this and other bugs which negate the effort and actually make battery use much, much worse.

Yup...classic double edged sword
