Title: Can no longer see Yahoo Email inbox
Post by: The Mule on June 20, 2015, 09:56:20 pm
Latest version of Aquamail, on my GS2 phone, and on my galaxy tab 8.9 tablet.  Both running Android 4.0.4. For the last 2 days.  I can see sent emails, but for the inbox, it's trying to sync, but I don't ever see the individual emails anymore. ??  Let me know any other info you need.  I had to use the native email app on my phone e to activate my forum membership to post this.  :-)  It keeps saying "loading...", and every now and then, the seconds counter statement pops up, but then still "loading.."  but never see my inbox.  Help.  I miss aquamail!   :-)

I did try uninstalling aquamail, no change in behavior.

I assume it's still same Yahoo problem that happened a week ago -- maybe they fixed *most* accounts but not all of them.

What can I say?

Is Yahoo hiring?

Getting paid for breaking stuff over and over again sounds appealing.

A mail service's own branded, targeted mail app -- and *ads*?

---

Seriously, I *think* it's that IMAP server issue from last week that continues to occur in some accounts (although fixed in most).

I'm going to try to attach a screen shot.

Yes, and it stays like that. That's exactly what I'm talking about.

You can stop the "infinite reloading" by turning off app settings -> message list -> "load more messages / automatically".

It won't help the messages actually load. For that, Yahoo needs to fix what they broke (specifically in your account).

The native email apps on my phone and tablet still work though.

Nice to know that not all apps happen to be affected, but... now what ??????

How about Outlook and Thunderbird (which are affected), is that credible enough?

If not, iOS Mail is also broken:

https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20150401142018AA9z6ba

Each mail app has its own mail sync algorithms. Some issues with some servers affect some mail apps but not others.

And there may be cases where some mail service issue affects, let's say, K9 Mail, or Outlook, but not Aqua -- but you won't read about it on this forum.

If Yahoo claims to support "The IMAP mail access protocol for use by third party mail apps", then that comes with certain obligations.

They have to conform to certain specs, and provide certain data in return to certain commands.

I have not seen any debug logs from *you*, but got a couple from other users when the issue was in full swing...

...and posted a detailed technical analysis on Yahoo's support forums.

Can't find it there now, and most of other users' messages are gone, cleaned up I guess.

I'll just give a very short summary:

The UID values referring to same messages -- differ when returned by different commands:

FETCH x:y (UID FLAGS)

and

FETCH x:y (UID BODY.PEEK[HEADER.FIELDS (
DATE MESSAGE-ID LIST-ID SUBJECT FROM REPLY-TO TO CC BCC X-PRIORITY RESENT-FROM
REFERENCES DISPOSITION-NOTIFICATION-TO CONTENT-TYPE
)] BODYSTRUCTURE RFC822.SIZE INTERNALDATE)

If anyone at Yahoo Support / Yahoo Engineering gives a shit, then those two lines of gibberish will actually make sense to them.

If not, then it doesn't matter.

OK, I get it.  There is a feedback function within Yahoo Email, so I've added it there:

Yahoo email still isn't playing nice, so I've switched to Type Mail.  Better than the stock app, but not as good as Aquamail.  I suppose until such time as Yahoo fixes whatever's wrong, or if possible, Yahoo problems can be programmed around within Aquamail, I guess I can't use Aquamail.

I implemented a workaround for Yahoo last time they broke it.

This time, based on the debug logs I've seen (from two users), it's much, much worse. I don't see how I could work around it.

Maybe they should shut down Yahoo Mail and keep 1) Flickr 2) the news site, and live off the Aliexpress investment.

Yahoo -- "we couldn't handle being a technology company, now we're an investment bank".

I won't disagree with your dissatisfaction with Yahoo.   ;)  I used to use them for my news, until they switched to that "never ending scrolling", and I hated that.  Switched to Google news.  But for whatever reason, I don't like what Google chooses as news as much as I liked Yahoo.  Oh well.

Oh well. I just hope they're on it.

Lots of recent comments.... So hopefully (haha) they know.

Kostya - I'm back!   :D  Yahoo and AquaMail all of a sudden, wouldn't play nice last year.  Tried Type Mail for a while, had bigtime syncing issues.  Switched to CloudMagic.  Was mostly happy with that one, but I missed your dark screen format.  CloudMagic recently changed to "Newton", and now they want to charge $50/yr for their app.  Fail.  I just tried Aquamail on my phone, and it's working again!!!

Thank You !!!

(Well, if you did anything.  Maybe Yahoo fixed their problem.)  And the first thing I did, was to enable the Dark theme.  Yaaay!

Speaking of Yahoo...

Recently they've started requiring OAUTH2 login, and not allowing the good old "email + password".

Fine, following in Google's steps.

Not fine:

They have not provided a way for third party developers to implement OAUTH2.

The support forums have quite a few messages from mail app developers -- and no response from Yahoo whatsoever.

https://developer.yahoo.com/forums/#/categories/oauth-and-openid

So just in case someone runs into this, and starts getting "login errors":

The only workaround, for now, is to re-enable "password based" logins here:

https://help.yahoo.com/kb/SLN27791.html

Yahoo calls this "allow access to less secure mail apps".

I've seen that manually logging in: they ask for your id on one screen, you click a button, then they ask for the password on the next screen, click a button, and then you're in.  Mine has been doing that for a while (over a year?), but cell phone/tablet email apps still work ok.  So far.  :)

Whether it's the default or not, my Yahoo settings do not have two step verification turned on, but I do have checked: Allow apps that use less secure sign in.

I don't remember ever changing those.

Yahoo doesn't seem very aggressive (yet) about turning off "less secure apps" (== "password based login"), so most accounts still should work without having to re-enable.
