If I can say Kostya:
YOU HAVE DONE AN EXCELLENT JOB WITH THIS NEW UI...
Just amazingly fresh and new look, and you made it so much "less boring" with only adding the blue fresh color...THANX  A LOT!!!

It happens on two devices. I updated from 1.5.0.23.

German merged.

Folder color shows in the message list widget -- if the widget points to the whole account, not just one folder (e.g. Inbox).

I saw some users on android reddit blaming AquaMail due to old/not modern UI recently. They will love this update.

But I agree that we need Black Material theme.

No, I don't.

Thanks but "no thanks".

>> reddit ... AquaMail

Did I make some sort of "worst software of the decade" list? :)

And now to something -- almost completely -- different.

Just downloaded the official Android 5.0 release / tools / emulator images.

When using the device's own Material theme, the system refuses to put the icon bar along the bottom.

I did report it as a bug as long ago as June. I guess they really want to push the Big Fat Button thing down everyone's throat... erm, I really meant "to promote design consistency", sorry.

On this:

>> When using the device's own Material theme, the system refuses to put the icon bar along the bottom

A new bug report I just filed got immediately closed as "Won't fix / working as intended".

This really narrows down my choices.
Title: Re: 1.5.1-24.2-dev2.3
Post by: Kostya Vasilyev on October 18, 2014, 01:00:46 am
We need to be more clear on what "material theme" is.

What I posted now is -- the app *emulating* the Android 5 Material theme when running on 4.0+ (including 5.).

It does not use the *system* Material theme in Android 5 (since it's not there on devices with 4.0, 4.0.3, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4).

When running on Android 5, I could "inherit" my new theme from the *system* Material theme (not from the 4.* "Holo" theme).

This would give a new look to things like checkboxes, radio buttons, etc., and maybe some other thing I don't know yet.

However -- this *system* Material theme does not support "action bar icons along the bottom", and it was just now marked as "working as intended / won't fix".

What this means in practical terms -- inheriting my new theme from the system level Material theme -- I'd *have* to use the Giant Button Floating in Space to give the user easy access to at least one command (and two more in the top bar... except it's one, just one icon, on a 480*800 screen... used to be two).

The older themes -- light, dark, dark + dark messages -- are not affected, I'm going to keep using the 4.* "holo" theme as their base.

---

I filed the original bug against the "L preview" over three months ago (July 17). It should have been possible to communicate this "won't fix" somewhere along the line. I guess better late than never, anyway.

Dev version works and looks good, however I noticed one issue: When I select "Move to trash" from the notification drawer, a confirmation dialogue pops up. I then confirm the action and the mail is being moved to trash, however the notification icon remains in the status bar. I would expect it to be cleared like in stable version.

Works fine for me. Are you sure not having another notification for another mail?

Yes, I'm sure it's AquaMail notification. It's working as expected in stable version, and misbehaves in dev version. Switching back to stable fixes it, so I'm able to reproduce this issue.

Maybe new "Toolbar" can be used instead of "action bar icons along the bottom"

I don't use AppCompat or ActionBarSherlock at all... and only a handful of classes from the support library.

I had to do a lot of work for two-panel mode, in version 1.2 (two years ago) and none of these tools or libraries were there (or usable) at the time.

PS - it's not "native", maybe you meant "emulated more closely" (read his response about elevation... there really is a bit of a difference between 5.0 and prior versions in terms of what the system can do).

Besides, I already have a "Toolbar" class -- I call it "BogusBar" ("bogus" - not the real ActionBar) -- and use it message view on phones, and the rich text editor... Only took them something like two years :)

Ummm. Maybe I'll spend the next few months tweaking colors, forget about everything else.

My thinking was:

- The new theme is something exciting, and more or less in line with "the new and shiny Android" (I dare not utter the M word).

- The old ones are still there, for those who are used to them -- but with better, sharper, more properly dark / light icons.

So there are choices already. Something new, something old, but better.

Am I wrong? It's all bad?

I like the new theme you - in particular your choice of the blue color. However make the colors on top and bottom CUSTOMIZABLE could be a good solution.

BTW:
I'm not really happy with the effect of "automatically darken account colors for the title bar".

>> I'm also not really happy with the effect of "automatically darken account colors for the title bar".

When you pick account colors -- or already picked them -- it's for the account list, which has black text. And the account list's background is white. So -- those colors are likely to be pale, light, not saturated...

Using those colors exactly as they are, in the new theme, with white icons and white text, is quite likely to look "bad" (unreadable).

Where am I wrong?

Yes, but I would like this option for color

- Choice the top and bottom bar color for unified message list, from the palette
- the same color of the account when you are inside a specific account or the same in previous point (unified message list), selectable choice

Dev version works and looks good, however I noticed one issue: When I select "Move to trash" from the notification drawer, a confirmation dialogue pops up. I then confirm the action and the mail is being moved to trash, however the notification icon remains in the status bar. I would expect it to be cleared like in stable version.

Sorry to bump this issue again, but that behaviour is really annoying. Seems though that no one else is facing it, so it may be related to my setup.

For me moving mails to trash from the notification drawer does not remove the notification icon - I have to manually swipe it away, which drives me nuts :-(

That's only related to the dev version where selecting an action from the notification drawer results in a popup dialogue. Stable version does not show this behaviour.

Kostya, any idea where I could dig around?
