Title: GMail & Pop3 and keep on server
Post by: HpW on September 29, 2014, 11:39:55 pm
Using 1.5.0.19... it looked on older releases as OK!

I use the mobile just to READ the messages and keep them on the server... on my Outlook 2007 will read the messages finally for tracking & save....

Now on AquaMail, as soon I have retrieved on mobile... the items (already read on AquaMail) will no longer available on the Outlook client...  >:(

is there any resent issues on GMail?  ::)

BTW: Using an unix related system it works like as expected and the messages appears on Outlook  :D

OK,

just read the header: POP3 was mentioned!

Some information given from Google:

Unless you're using recent link>> https://support.google.com/mail/answer/47948 (https://support.google.com/mail/answer/47948) mode to download mail to multiple clients, make sure you've opted not to leave messages on the server. Your POP settings in Gmail settings are what determines whether or not messages stay on the server, so this setting in your client won't affect how Gmail handles your mail

What is 'recent mode?'...

Setting up 'recent mode'
In your POP client settings, replace 'username@gmail.com' in the 'Username' or 'Email' field with 'recent:username@gmail.com'

This help me to configure AquaMail using recent mode... problem fixed so far.

Cheers

Yes, Gmail's POP3 is "very special" -- and the preset in Aqua for @gmail addresses uses IMAP...

Hello,

I mean that I have found a special issue, while it's really dependent if AquaMail is already active (visible in task list) and whether you switch your mobile on and start AquaMail...

As mentioned above: I use the recent option and have a central PC how collects and reads all mail and this one is in sync with the Web-mail read-state of the e-mails. In other words, if any other client reads or deletes the message, the e-mail will no longer posted to the central collection PC.

Also configured on AquaMail on delete: Keep always messages on server (OK I use the German settings)

Now if you start AquaMail (and only this app is running against the server) and read your e-mails and open it and delete using the bottom left button... this message or messages will get the read state on the google pop server!

BUT: If you redo the same with AquaMail running and read new messages... it will work as expected

In other words, in the morning, switch on the mobile,  read the new messages BUT do not delete messages until you have read them from your centralized PC or keep running your mobile & have AquaMail allways active.  ::)

Since POP3 can't access server side folders -- "move to deleted" is really a device-only operation.

Until you empty the Deleted folder in Aqua -- at which point those messages will be deleted from the POP3 server.

Also worth mentioning - GMail has a setting in web mail, for what happens when a message is retrieved using POP3:

https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?shva=1#settings/fwdandpop

Mine says "mark as read", but there are other options, and I'm not sure what the default is (I might have changed it in the past). Probably worth checking, though.

Hi again,

>> Until you empty the Deleted folder in Aqua --
>> at which point those messages will be deleted from the POP3 server.

This is IMHO false, while I have set on Aquamail "Never delete from server"! And just simple remove the message from Smart Folder. That's what I understand ... while in the left menu, there is also a delete entry, and this will ask: Delete from server... Y/N.

>> Mine says "mark as read"

Yes, I have the same! With the recent:email-address AquaMail will not mark them on google as read! But your delete will mark them as read!

Hi again,

>> Currently, with POP3 and AquaMail:
>> - when you move a message to [ Deleted ] folder (i.e. simple delete), it is marked read on server

Please change this or may with a configurable setting  ;D

>> As far as I understand your need, I suggest that you try to "hide - keep on server" messages instead of "deleting" them.

this is already ON! That's why I am complaining   :'(

Kostya,

there are other mechanism within AquaMail who causes the same message read on Google Pop3...

May a re-read or reopen of the message in the smart folder... while have the same read issue without deleting the messages.

POP3 does not have a way to mark messages read or unread on the server from a mail app.

Most POP3 servers will mark messages as read (in web mail and for IMAP) once they've been downloaded.

And about my assertion regarding POP3 and mark unread -- I've gone through this before, like 10 rounds, with another user...

If someone wants to tell me that I'm wrong about that, please provide a link to the POP3 specification and the exact command that can be used to change message state on the server from a mail app.

This will save everyone a lot of time.

Here a google specific note if you configure a pop3 client to keep messages as unread:

just read the header: POP3 was mentioned!

Some information given from Google:

Unless you're using recent link>> https://support.google.com/mail/answer/47948 [nofollow] mode to download mail to multiple clients, make sure you've opted not to leave messages on the server. Your POP settings in Gmail settings are what determines whether or not messages stay on the server, so this setting in your client won't affect how Gmail handles your mail

What is 'recent mode?'...

Setting up 'recent mode'
In your POP client settings, replace 'username@gmail.com [nofollow]' in the 'Username' or 'Email' field with 'recent:username@gmail.com'

Paris,

well again... ::)

The business requirement:

1. Have a google account
2. Have a one centralized master PC with Outlook (pop3) with ALL E-Mails as in the google web account
3. On travel, have a mobile client (pop3) with reading the e-mails from the same google account.
4. Reading the e-mails as on 3), the e-mails should be still presented as on 2) where the centralized e-mails will be collected and saved (=business requirement)

To have this google allows to use the "recent" as :

Unless you're using recent link>> https://support.google.com/mail/answer/47948 [nofollow] [nofollow] mode to download mail to multiple clients, make sure you've opted not to leave messages on the server. Your POP settings in Gmail settings are what determines whether or not messages stay on the server, so this setting in your client won't affect how Gmail handles your mail

The current situation:

1. I send an e-mail to google account
2. Centralized pc is OFF
3. Manually sync the pop3 account using aquamail
4. See one new e-mail (1) on my mobile... do not more and do not open the e-mail.... ;)
5. Close the aquamail on the mobile
6. Start the PC and would like to get the related e-mail....

7. to e-mail is presented and will never be presented at all  >:(

This is the culprit... to you have it now???

Paris

>> And you use recent:username currently?
>> You can set AquaMail account using recent. This should solve the issue.

I have configured Aquamail with recent but does not work at all!

That's why I am complaining.... :(

This is not an AquaMail issue.

Gmail's POP3 is *special* and unless you use its "recent:" mode, it (the Gmail POP3 server) will do exactly what you described above -- report each message to a mail app exactly once, and then never again.

Yes google pop3 is very special:

1. the "recent:" does not work for me... has this been successfully tested by an other human beeing?

Using the suggested google pop3 pick configuration:

1. they do not support "recent:"

2. they do not support: "Leave a copy of retrieved messages on the server"

in other words I am puzzled...

Cheers

Well,

the simple solution on google was, to forward from your main/business account to a second account, where leaving your e-mails on the main account...

cheers

Yes, there are people who use Gmail with POP3 and "recent:".

I also recommend setting the account's "remove deleted" ON (default for POP3 is off -- this is under the account's options and folders -> account options). In AquaMail I mean.
