If you use AquaMail counter widget, do you see the recent (unread) counter? Have you tried that?

If you know how to do it, try get APK of stock sms app and upload it here. Maybe we can get app badges code from it.

There are three third party launchers that my app supports -- and it's official and suppored:

Apex Launcher Pro
Nova Launcher Prime + Tesla Unread
Smart Launcher 2

Sony / Samsung / LG are supported using undocumented, unofficial functions, intended for apps built into the system.

Expecting Aqua to support more device manufacturers, using more undocumented, unofficial functions, is just not reasonable, sorry.

Please consider using one of those three launchers. Each of them is excellent.

I've used Nova and Apex launcher and both have the ability to show unread counts.  For both apps, you have to download a separate unread count app but that's it.

Oh, with Apex, you might have to uninstall Aquamail, apply Apex launcher and then reinstall.  That's the only way I could get it to work.  Something to do with the Apex permissions or something.  It's no big deal to do this though.  Just create a backup of the Aquamail app and when you reinstall it, run the back up and it will be like you never deleted it.

Yes, Apex requires for AquaMail (and other apps that use the unread count overlay) to acquire a permission.

This permission is defined by Apex, and is granted to other apps when they're installed. If Apex wasn't installed yet, then this permission has not been defined and can't be granted. Hence the required ordering.
