Title: 1.3.20 (updated: 1.3.20.4)
Post by: Kostya Vasilyev on February 12, 2014, 12:02:25 am
New development build:

http://www.aqua-mail.com/download/AquaMail-market-1.3.20.apk

http://www.aqua-mail.com/download/AquaMail-market-1.3.20.4.apk

Version 1.3.9.20

+ Settings -> notifications -> about "new" messages (not all unread like before).

+ Navigation drawer for quickly switching folders (Andorid 4.1+, on by default on phone-sized screens, settings -> look and feel).

+ Message list colors, backgrounds, font sizes customization (settings -> message list).

+ Unread message count badge for recent Samsung devices (stock launcher: TouchWiz).

Version 1.3.9.11

+ Long press on a phone number (in message content) to send SMS / copy / share.

+ Format=flowed encoding is now optional, off by default (settings -> Mail, other).

Technical stuff:

Message list item rendering code has had substantial changes. Thanks to this, two-panel animations (when the message list changes its width) are now smoother than ever before.

The code handles RTL text, but since I don't speak Arabic or Hebrew, my testing wasn't as complete as I would have liked. If there are any issues with RTL, please let me know. Same goes for any other message list item rendering defect.

For "notify about new messages", each account's "notification waterline" gets reset when you launch the app's UI, or swipe away the notification.

Not sure if I should reset the "new message" counters on all widgets when you exit the app.

*****

Maybe it's just me, but I can't send emails after installing this version. I get "network error" when I send an email. Emails are received fine.

I therefore used titanium backup to restore the previous version and the emails I couldn't send went out fine.

@someone - to my knowledge (irony) there weren't any changes to EWS or SMTP sending code in this version. The IPv6 / IPv4 workaround is still in place too.

But since you've ran into trouble - debug log pleeeeze?

Crash fix: "new" notifications set for Smart Folder, exactly one new message.

Исправление вылета: "новые" уведомления на Умную Папку, в точности одно новое письмо.

Installed 1.3.20.1 again and again it could not send email out. Error says network error

I have debug logging enabled. Where do I find that file to send you?

Am going back to the version that works.

Hello Kostya,
I like this update! I realized how good your color settings are - It took me about one hour to get a matching setting for the group header.
There is one thing which is irretating: When I tried to install 1.3.20.1, I got the message that it is already installed. But when I go to your "about", it says AQ Pro 1.3.20...
Regards,
Götz

Nice surprise about the colors :)

On the "already installed" -- are you trying to use "adb" from a desktop computer? In that case, please throw in "-r" (reinstall).

Loving the new colour/font options for the Message List screen, but although I can see how to change the background colour for read/unread message status, it would be much more useful to me to be able to set different background colours for messages that belong to different email accounts.

The Account Options > Assign Colour feature allows me to set a nice pastel background for each account header, so would it be possible to add one extra tickbox in the Message List Customise section to allow that chosen pastel colour to be used as an item background to differentiate messages from accounts within the Smart Folder view? That would be much clearer than the current corner tabs.

Or did I miss something and it's in there somewhere?

@andrewilley -- I assume this is in the context of the smart folder, which combines messages from multiple accounts / folders?

Each folder has (and has had, since forever) a color label that is used in the smart folder. The colors are assigned at random, but you can change them. Please see the FAQ (link below) under Smart Folder.

@doctorow -- Thanks! It was crashing on any device with a phone-sized screen (less than "phabet" sized). Sorry. Fixed:

I had the problem of not downloading emails automatically, even the push service not working, I have completely uninstalled Aquamail and installed the latest version, now everything works perfectly.
Who has installed many upgrades, reset the board, for once, and start from scratch.

Since we're talking color, is there a way to change just the color of the small arrows that indicate (in the smart folder message list) that the email has been replied to / forwarded / etc. These indicators are so small and gray that they don't stand out sufficiently for me. Red/blue/purple would be better.

Otherwise, the default gray color scheme is fine for me.

Working well now, thanks! Also discovered the Network->SSL hardening option. Turned on didn't immediately change anything; I had to kill the Aqua process and restart it to see the difference in the server log files.

Previous:
Feb 17 15:05:08 mail cyrus/imaps[29999]: SSL_accept() incomplete -> wait
Feb 17 15:05:08 mail cyrus/imaps[29999]: SSL_accept() succeeded -> done
Feb 17 15:05:08 mail cyrus/imaps[29999]: starttls: TLSv1 with cipher AES128-SHA (128/128 bits reused) no authentication

After restart with SSL hardening:
Feb 17 15:05:53 mail cyrus/imaps[29923]: SSL_accept() incomplete -> wait
Feb 17 15:05:53 mail cyrus/imaps[29923]: SSL_accept() succeeded -> done
Feb 17 15:05:53 mail cyrus/imaps[29923]: starttls: TLSv1 with cipher DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits reused) no authentication

So AES with 256 bit is now used along with ephemeral Diffie–Hellman for perfect forward secrecy. Same for SMTP, where it now uses ECDHE-RSA-AES256-SHA. Very neat!

@doctorow -

Yes, SSL hardening won't go into effect immediately for IMAP because of connection caching, but it should anyway in about 30-60 minutes.

SSL negotiations are now cached, too, which improves performance (IIRC, your mail server is very fast with it already... a nice fast VPS?)

@Fcasoli -

System settings -> battery stats lists apps and various hardware / software subsystems, ordered by their battery consumption. Just watching the overall battery indicator in the status bar is not enough to know which it is... :)

@Kostya, cool, so you are now using Session Identifiers or Session Tickets for TLS resumption (if supported by the server)?

The server is a VPS, but it's hosted on a dedicated server that I manage, which is completely underused in terms of resources. Plus, I pass the aesni CPU flag over to the VPS, which should help with SSL performance (not for the actual key exchange, but for the rest of the encrypted communication). This, plus Aqua now caching the session (i.e. no more unnecessary key exchanges) really helps! ;)

@doc - I don't know the internals, it's all Android Java classes at the level I'm dealing with. Since 4.1 they've switched to OpenSSL libraries (from Bouncy Castle crypto that was used before). That's all I know.

My VPS is also seriously underutilized -- keeps the promo web site nice and fast :)

Yes, in the Smart Folder view, where messages from multiple accounts can be seen.

I know about (and use) the little triangular coloured markers in Smart Folders, but they are not very easy to distinguish & separate lines with various coloured icons/sender thumbnails/etc nearby.

What I was asking for was an option to have a simple plain coloured background for the whole message area within the list (in the same way you can choose to highlight read/unread messages, although I don't happen to use that particular option). The background colour already chosen in Account Options > Assign Colour would be an ideal one to use, so all messages relating to one account could have the same background colour. (The small corner flashes could still be used to indicate different additional folders as well, giving the best of both worlds that way).

"+ Unread message count badge for recent Samsung devices (stock launcher: TouchWiz)."

That is *really* nice feature! TouchWiz has API for that or how did you do it?
Can you add support for launcher in Nexus devices? My Nexus 7 is waiting :D

@pyler --

On the icon badges -- it's near the top of my personal "why I hate developing for Android" list.

Standard Android doesn't support this (meaning stock launcher, and stock firmware). Most major manufacturers implemented it so their devices can be just like an iPhone.

( a typical conversation: "- What brand is your iPhone? // - It's a Samsung, why?" )

Each of those implementations is only for that manufacturer's own apps (built into the firmware), with no official documentation, an they're incompatible with each other (naturally!).

However, someone figured out how to use the undocumented functions for Samsung's TouchWiz and posted it somewhere. All three or five lines of code.

Samsung can block this feature for third party apps if they choose to. Or go in the opposite direction and document it (in theory). There is no way to tell.

And to reiterate -- stock Android (really, stock Android launcher) does not support this feature.

If you really need this, feel free to install Nova Launcher Prime or Apex Launcher Pro. My app supports both.

Yes, that's where I found it.

This is called "Stack Overflow driven development": 1) search for something in Google 2) find code on Stack Overflow 3) copy and paste. I love it, it's a great way to speed up development, with no need to strain my little brain by having to think.

Re: Sony -- not sure yet.

First, I need to borrow my nephew's Sony phone (I don't have any myself), and that won't happen until after the Olympics is over (long story).

Second, Sony specific code requires a permission. Every time an app has a new permission, Google Play makes users confirm the update, displaying the new permission (marked as such) and all the old ones.

And so every time, I get emails like "why does your app need access to the Internet, is it a virus?" and undoubtedly, some number of uninstalls and 1-star Google Play ratings.

Maybe... change notification icon in status bar according to number of new emails.. so icon in status bar = AquaMail icon with small circle with number of new emails inside..

Cleaner way?  ;)

These small additions can make users happy :) bcoz its cool :D

Counts in notification icons were supported by Android 2.*, a standard feature (unlike icon badges).

Since 3.0, counts only show in expanded notifications (lower right), not as status bar icon overlays.

Really?? They download an email app and wonder why it needs to connect to the net? Should they really be allowed to own a "smart" phone? :)

But in older releases the Mails was also (automatic) deleted when exit AM.

@ice - first time I hear about something like this, so it's safe to say yes (no report, no log -> no fix).

Please capture this in a debug log with "raw data" enabled. How to do this is linked just below, in my signature.

I resolved now changing type account: i have insert the accounts as pop3, not imap. So now if i delete messages from trash not come back.

I think the.. accounts window became impossible to reach with the new navigation drawer, unless I'm really blind.

^This window right here - at least while having only one account.

With Volume or Menu you can adjust it.

No, I can't access that tab with neither Volume nor Menu buttons. That is, only with navigation drawer enabled.

I'am using the navigation drawer also.
You have to configure the Volume switch in the Menus to use it for adjust.

To access the account list from the message list, just use the Back button (real or on-screen for those devices that don't have a real button).

Embedded images - not too well so far, I'm afraid (because of medical problems, my brain does not want to work...)

To access the account list from the message list, just use the Back button (real or on-screen for those devices that don't have a real button).

Back button closes the app for me, and hitting the back button has the same effect as tapping on the folder name at its right, opens the folders menu. So basically I can't access the account options, with navigation drawer on (Nexus 5).

I guess you've configured the app to "close from message list". I only realized that this may be the case later last night :)

I've added an item right in the drawer that takes you back to the account list, even if that setting is on.

PS - version numbers are becoming a mess... human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... :)

*****

Hello Kostya,

Is your device's memory card (or the large built-in memory) full? Is it corrupted perhaps?

Did you recently update to 4.4 and the attachments folder (in Aqua) is set to a real "external" microSD card? 4.4 doesn't allow access apps to access that anymore.

It's large built-in memory, and am not having any problem with any other apps or storage files.
My phone is HTC One S with 4.1 version.

For Sony is there some code also  ;D Will you also support it?  8)

I found that LG launcher support it too :)

But i didnt found code how to implement for LG yet :(

Yes.

This feature can be found on Samsung, LG, Sony, HTC devices -- because their product managers decided that "it has to be like the iPhone".

What they all forgot to do is document it for use by third party apps.

Someone figured it out for Samsung and Sony, but I'm unable to find anything on LG and HTC.

Oh, and the irony -- HTC has an "OpenSense SDK" with a bunch of stuff (hey, a date picker!), but not this. Same goes for LG.

dear Kostya, your answer deserves that all members of this forum go away...
But you've built a forum, where many members spend a bit of their time and are passionate about giving you tips, asking and helping to make your application better. Or maybe you can think we are useless.
Everyone else, I hope that they have brought you some advantage.
You do not think that with this interest, it is not normal to hope to see the news.
This does not force you to do so, but neither you can ban us from thinking it.
I will continue to wait.

@Fcasoli - Don't know why you took it this way, but let me try again, since it's probably my fault.

When I previously wrote about having serious medial problems I did not mean a "flu" or a "sinus infection" -- simple things where one can take a simple medicine and be back on his feet and working in a day or two.

It's much more serious, difficult, and has a devastating impact on my productivity as a software developer (and everyday life, but that doesn't belong here).

My name is not Angelina Jolie, so I don't feel any urges to share all the details with the world, and going to leave it at that.

However, the effect is that, for the last three months or so, I've been unable to work on anything but really trivial things.

I am also unable to make any predictions about where things are headed and when it's going to get better, if at all. Did Steve Jobs (just to use an example) have a plan to end up where he is now? I mean, dead? Probably not. And he's not being very productive these days either.

I fully realize that every day I'm not making progress on my app is a day when competing apps keep improving. The world is full of bright, dedicated people.

I also realize that a software product stands on its own, it is what it is, regardless of my, um, "story".

I appreciate this forum and all the people who first came to ask a question and then kept coming back to help others. I really do. But what I was trying to address is something entirely different, which I thought was your question -- when and how (and if) this app would continue to develop with new features.

And this is why I wrote what I wrote -- if you're unhappy with my app as it is now, then by all means use one that makes you more happy.
