Title: Emails shown as read on server when they load to AquaMail
Post by: rockindiver on September 16, 2013, 11:54:06 pm
My work Outlook emails (via POP3) automatically change to "read" once they download to AquaMail even if I haven't read them. Is there a way to keep my server independent in this aspect?

I guess you're using POP3 in Outlook and IMAP in AquaMail...

Many (most) mail servers will mark messages on the server as read when they're fetched over POP3. If AquaMail is configured using IMAP, then those read state changes will propagate to the mobile device.

Mine did not.
I was using servers on 1und1.de, and downloaded pop3 to my iPhone without deleting from server, and pop3 to my PC With deletion.
Thunderbird on PC and the apple email client would both report unopened emails as not read.
This was also what I expected.
(Of course I only ever had a partial set of emails on the iPhone, but it was good for getting mail when away from home.)

If it's POP3 on both devices / computers, then yes, both will track unread locally and show previously unseen messages as unread.

I was addressing the case with mixed POP3 and IMAP, where downloading via POP3 commonly (but not necessarily always) marks read on the server, and this later syncs via IMAP.

I'm having a similar issue - the problem is that it marks the emails as read when they're delivered to my phone regardless if I have actually read them so I have no idea what I actually read without re-reading.  It didn't used to be this way.  I have it set up as IMAP/SMTP

Please check if "Windows Outlook version 2013" is connecting to same account using POP3 -- and AquaMail is set up using IMAP.

As I wrote above, most if not all mail servers will mark as read, on the server, any messages fetched over POP3.

This is fine for POP3 itself -- it doesn't provide read/unread state sync, so a message's state is tracked by Outlook itself.

Trouble comes when AquaMail fetches same messages over IMAP a bit later (or already has them, and refreshes their states):

Since they're marked as read on the server (by having been fetched over POP3) -- and -- IMAP has read/unread state sync -- then this "marked read" state will sync into AquaMail.

To fix:

Switch AquaMail to POP3 or switch Outlook to IMAP. I think using IMAP everywhere is nicer.

To "switch", you will need to remove the account from the respective app and add it back, using Manual settings (in AquaMail), choosing the protocol (IMAP or POP3), and similar procedure in Outlook.
