I'm getting ready to post the 1.3.0 update.
My list for the next iteration, this is more or less in order...
- Navigation drawer
( Yes, I'm a reformed man now... nav drawers are not a fad, they're "progress", on par with the invention of antibiotics, the internal combustion engine, and city sewers )
- Notify about "new" messages, not all "unread" (including old ones)
- Embedded images in the rich text editor, including the signature
- Swipe to delete / mark read / etc. in message lists
I hope this next iteration (1.4? or should I go to "AquaMail 17" already?) doesn't take as long as 1.3 did.
-
threading messages? :) and another ideas by me: http://www.aqua-mail.com/forum/index.php?topic=1831.0
and maybe Showcase view (i gave you link for showcase library some time ago) for tips? it will look better, native.
and when user got more than 1 email, please add option to Mark all as read in notification.

Hi, very interesting follow your race to develop this beautiful client,
talking about style, I would lice a colored interface in message list, for example:
- select color for sender name
- selet color and font (size, type..) for object title
- select color and font for preview text
at this point the same in message page, when you open the email...
thanks for your feedback.
ciao

Um, let's not make this list a mile long.
I could easily write "yes, yes, yes", but...
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall write down all potential features, and lose track of his schedule?

we have a life ahead (I do not know how long) to make Aquamail perfect, sublime and the best in the world. :P

Thanks for your support.
There are more and more email apps for Android, the new ones are pretty and backed up by funded companies.
I'm not sure how much time have before mine becomes irrelevant, but... I just don't have "more developers and designers" to throw at this project, sorry!

The big companies do not have a direct and fast feedback, with users, so generally do less well.
I do not know your mail client, better than yours, I've tried several, including that of Samsung, which has some major weaknesses.
How can we help you find resources to go forward?
A project that stops, it dies.
What do you need? heads, money, advertising?
Can you use G+ to find support and donations?
-
Oh, I don't know about heads... Have not worked with anyone or for anyone in a long time.
I think the world will just have to bear with me. Maybe a pretty mediocre developer, but I'm still interested in continuing with this app.
-
I used K9 for a long time, then I wanted something more nice and I tried Kaiten, but luck does not want it, my account of the work does not work, then it Keiten reintroduced support for SSLv3 with last update.
Now I use AquaMail and I do not want to change, so we are with you!
Tell us what you need and we will find it.

without adding too much to do, you might think that, for the sender and the title of the message:
- Text color (black, green, red, blue, purple, orange, gray, burgundy)
- Normal or bold font, size small, medium (default), large.
thanks
-
Font sizes can be adjusted already, including in message list mode, by using the hardware volume buttons or the menu.

yes, but not independently one item respect other...

Message list / account list / message view font sizes are independent of one another.
You're right about the individual font sizes within each message list item. Should be possible as a side effect of something else I'm doing...

I would like, most important in list view, for example, sender red font 4 bold, object green font 6 oblique, preview blue font 8 normal... :D

HTML signatures perhaps??? It would be great!
-
HTML signatures have been there since 1.2.5, released mid-September.
No embedded images support yet, but that's on the task list above.
-
Excuse me Kostya but this is like saying that this world is full of peace but, unfortunately, nobody applies it. I've tried many HTML tags with no success so, please, post an example here so as I will be able to test it.
Thank you.
-
Wheyll....
When you go to edit a signature, there is a button/panel that lets you switch to formatted (rich) text and apply formatting: bold, italic, underline, font color, font size.
Formatted (rich) text is then sent using HTML.
Not sure I understand your comment about HTML tags.
By that logic, Gmail (web), or Yahoo, or Hotmail don't support formatted text either.
They have buttons for bold, italic, etc, but how do I enter something like:
<div style='padding: 3em; font-weight: 700; font-family: Comic Sans'>
Don't see a way to do that.
-
I bought the pro key a few days ago. I have been using k9 and the standard android mail app. I am planning to using this one because it is much more flexible and suited for the advanced mail user.
Like others mentioned in a separate thread is that the main thing (for me at least) that is missing is x509v3 based message signing and encryption.
Keep up the good work

Scanno,
Thank you for your comments.
If you look at all other mail apps, there are a lot of features. Some need X to work "like in Outlook", others need Y because "I'm really used to it in Thunderbird", and then "app ABC can do Z, how come you don't have this most basic feature".
I'm just trying to pick a handful to work on at a time.
-
Not sure I understand your comment about HTML tags.
...no, no, Kostya, I was just asking how to reach that result, i.e. by adding an "href" and "img src" tags. For the first you've already answered that, if I'm not mistaken, "href" are automatically recognized if written in plain text, so the only missing function is the capability to add or link pictures.
Of course Aqua Mail is way ahead of Gmail, Yahoo etc., the lack of pictures in the signature is the only thing missing in comparison with the stock Samsung mail App, which is totally crap for many other characteristic.
Keep up the good work.
-
Being able to embed images is in the short list for 1.4... Hope it doesn't take as long as EWS did.
-
color, font, char dimension in message list, not yet? :-[

Sure, a Bluetooth remote for coffee makers is too.
An indispensable feature for corporate and work at home environments alike.

Yes i am excited about way how Aquamail works, great functions and frequent improvements.
I am scrooge, i am not buying software when i can get free.
But it was satisfaction to buy PRO license to support You. Even when free version was suitable for me.
Thumb up!

Did someone say "colors"?
( help, my eyes are bleeding :) )
-
Not sure what would be a good way to work this into settings.
On the one hand, that's definitely a "look and feel" thing... on the other hand, the "message list" screen already has settings to customize the look and feel of message lists.
Might end up creating a separate section on the "message list" screen.
-
dear Kostya,
I hope you are a beautiful girl, so I send you a kiss.
Otherwise, I'll just offer my congratulations and thank you.
You're giving me an idea,
divided we keep the settings of colors based on the fact that a message is read or unread ... for further diversifying the two states. This can be done in the title and in the first few lines of text.
I think the solution to create a sub-menu for this long list of settings, is good...
You are simply the best!
Show must go on!
-
Hi,
I add a small feature, I think, to develop,
the menu bar (sync, new message, search...) in message list or the bar (waste, replay, replay to all...) inside a message, could be in top or bottom screen, some users like fto have it at top screen (not for me).
ciao
-
Um, I'm nothing like a beautiful girl. Perhaps your kisses can find better use.
Played with things a bit more, made a new "customize" section on the "message list" screen.
The font sizes are relative adjustments (relative to the default sizes), so that the volume buttons still keep their function.

A puzzle: why does the "go back" icon (in the action bar, left of the app's icon) in these screenshots look like three stripes, and not like the regular "left arrow"?
The idea that I got Adidas ("DIE MARKE MIT DEN 3 STREIFEN") to sponsor the app's development is... nice, but not it.

you are developing the left menu to swap, like Android 4.4 style ;) 8)
Can I (we) have v. 1.3.7 with color settings? :P
-
Correct, it's a navigation drawer.
Not for 1.3.7, I'm still rolling out the 1.3.* series (it's at 50%, to go to 100% tomorrow, if all goes well).
Going to give it a bit of time, to make sure I can issue another update if necessary, with just whatever changes are absolutely necessary.
Then I will be able to merge the new stuff into the main branch and post a new development build.
-
at the end, you can born AquaMail2, and open a show with G+ and write a very long list of features in Google Play.
Beautiful App!
-
Actually, I'm thinking about using Google+ for the next release for beta-testing...
There is a way to set this up through Play -- those users who join a Google+ group will get the beta version from Play.
I'm not a big fan of G+, but this would be a good way to involve more users in beta testing. And that would be a useful thing - making it more likely that various issues (with server and device compatibility, not to mention my own bugs :) ) would be discovered before I post a "release" version.
-
A bit of technical detail:
To reduce the delay before a folder selected with the navigation drawer actually starts animating in, I had to completely change the way message list items are put together. Rather than using standard Android text elements, I'm now using low-level text rendering functions ("draw this piece of text at these coordinates"), doing all the measurement, line breaking, and placement of text in my code.
This made two panel animations much smoother, too (when the message list's width changes while animating). Standard Android code would allocate and throw away memory objects on each animation frame, and then the garbage collector could pause the animation for 50-150ms, pretty much killing it.
As a side effect, this is what made it possible to customize the colors and sizes of individual pieces of text.
-
Hi Kostya,
about this menu, what do you want to show?
I thint possible to viaualize the folder structure,
the same in Gmail
http://android.hdblog.it/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/posta-archiviata.jpg (http://android.hdblog.it/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/posta-archiviata.jpg)
or with better layout like on my PC.

What do you think about?
-
At the very least, it will have (it already has) the list of folders, with up-to-date unread counts.
Not sure yet about the list of accounts, since there already is an "account list" window.
-
Could be nice a configurable menu, based on user desire...

I think the separator for every day is better if like the actual background, gray,
about the read email, could be better a soft grey background, less gray than day-separator, and text color like unread message, the user can apply different color from unread, if required...
As default text I would like:
Read and unread object: black
sender: bordeaux (like this http://laminatefinder.com/sites/default/files/products/Bordeaux%20HG%2036530-9001.jpg (http://laminatefinder.com/sites/default/files/products/Bordeaux%20HG%2036530-9001.jpg) )
previous rows: blue (like this http://img2.findthebest.com/sites/default/files/2307/media/images/Dark_Blue_429608_i0.png (http://img2.findthebest.com/sites/default/files/2307/media/images/Dark_Blue_429608_i0.png))

@beerlay -- there is a smiley in my message...
@fcasoli -- there are now settings for group header's background and text, so you'll be able to pick red on maroon or cyan on blue, or whatever you fancy :)

complete transparent? It is present yet...
I find
I suggest to have two options:
Transparent with black text
Transparent with white text
What do you think about?

Hi Kostya,
the correct name for four themes you have in your widget, are, for me:
Italian (English description)
Nero (black) instead of Metallo
Bianco (White) instead of Porcellana
Traslucido (translucent) Instead of Vetro
Trasparente (transparent) instead of Senza bordo

Hi Kostya,
What do you think to open a special tread with the complete and sequencing list of tasks to do? Every time you complete one, you can mark as finished or with color.
To be very innovative you can also open a poll to define priorities.... before....
Very interactive 8)
Sent from my Galaxy Note 3 / S4 Mini <> Gear
-
I already posted my "todo" list here somewhere, recently...
It's long and boring, and most items don't correspond to highly visible end user features.
Not sure how a poll would help anything -- I'm not in the habit of goofing around, drinking beer and playing Diablo, but things take as long as they take because I'm a one man team, doing everything.
And I really don't think that the tasks I picked (in this topic above) are wrong.
One could argue that the list should include a dozen other things, but... please see above.
-
You must drive your project yourself, my idea was to do visible the list of "accepted" tasks and reduce requests, maybe repeated, on the same topic...
I have my small list in Excel to avoid to ask twice the same feature :-[
-
Excel -- fancy!!! I just use a plain text file.
There is a sticky in the "feature requests" section with the list of tasks I've picked to work on next.

threading messages? :) and another ideas by me: http://www.aqua-mail.com/forum/index.php?topic=1831.0
and maybe Showcase view (i gave you link for showcase library some time ago) for tips? it will look better, native.

Please if you do consider threading messages at least give us the option to disable this. This is the reason i use your app and not gmail for android.

Threading messages should be optional only, if you have time to develop it.
-
Yes, definitely, I understand.
-
Got to say loving your app, came from K-9 which i think is awesome, yours is just more slick, easier to setup out of the box.
I know you have limited resources but perhaps you could ask for donations every couple of months?
Im doubt anyone will object and it would help give you some additional income. Plus you could use the income to pay for developers to work on additional items which are extremely time consuming that you may not have time for at the moment or to pay for conversations of the app to IOS etc.
-
Hmm, thanks for the suggestion, but:
The biggest issue is not money. I've been living with serious illnesses for close to 20 years now, and it's just not conductive to regular, predictable, productive work (for example, I've not been able to do much of anything for the last two weeks).
Hiring people, even if just for specific tasks, would bring complications too, I don't see it as a magic bullet.
Besides, since the app already has a paid version, I'm not at all sure that asking for additional donations would be appropriate.
-
A couple of things i would like to be able to do, is put my replies directly into the original message (similar to Outlook) bullets would be nice. Other than that the improvements made since I started using the App certainly makes it a great product, keep it up.

Sorry for the duplicate.
Feature Request.

You can trust.
I've tried a lot other clients (all buyed).
But your client is awesome. And there is no client who it's perfect. I'am missing some features, but i can wait.
Keep on your valuable work.
-
Yes Kostya, we love your app and we are waiting for colors and fonts in message lists!!
Thank you!
-
Yes, I know. It's really incredible, in a bad way, how much energy an illness can take.
I'm just starting to come around, was able to do a bit of work on notifications today (which is the last task before the next dev build, with nav drawer and message list customization).
-

PS: I'am waiting for encryption e.g APG.

Yes, and also message threading, two-way contact and calendar sync for Exchange, swipe everywhere, etc, etc, etc.
I have all these things written down, but I've been seriously ill for the last month, unable to work *at all*, and just now starting to recover.

Hi Kostya,
really good to see that you're going to recover. The most important thing on your priority list should be your health. All other things can wait.
Hope you're well soon!
-
It's not so really a question of priorities, it's just my brain not working lately. Thank you.
-
Don't stress yourself. A bad working brain is probably simply a sign, that your body needs some more time to recover. Take it easy, dude!
-

we're all pulling for you Kostya. Take your time to get well. You already have the best email agent in Android and you got there in record time. Take a vacation if you need it. You certainly deserve it and we're grateful for your work and support.
-
Add my voice and thanks to this as well. Many of us here all understand and appreciate the effort you are putting in to this with all your health concerns.
Your health is #1 - I'd much rather personally have a Kostya keeping telling us that he'll be getting to swipe to delete eventually rather than no Kostya at all.
Take care and all the best from the USA!

Just installed this app today and already unistalled all of the other, cludgy, bad looking apps from my phane. Signed up to the forums since I see how Kostya is involved with the user community. As a developer (.NET not mobile) I wanted to give it a shot to write my own app since the other ones for accessing Exchange 2010 through EWS have left me wanting. I am not sure if I can help you, Kostya, but if anything is needed, just ask!
As a token of my appreciantion I will be buying the unlock key to AM as well!
Keep up the great work!

Appreciate the kudos, and hope you continue to enjoy my app!

Not in the near future, for either (bullets / numbering / tables).
Should I give up on email entirely and try to write a word processor? :)

It was just a request to check, could enhance the experience, but it is too much to ask, will refrain from asking, thanks
-
Dear Kostya,
as meny people before me sad, your app is the best e-mail agent on Android, congratulations !
but if you would like to improve it, one suggestion from me.
I'm using your app on my cell phone and very often aftre taking some pictures, I want to attach and send them by e-mail.
Unfortunately, as most of the pictures are of high resolution, when I want to send them by e-mail, the size of this e-mail is quite big.
Is it possible to add the functionality to change the resolution while attaching the photos to the e-mail like in android stock e-mail agent?
attached the print screen of this functionality from android stock agent.
-
Try image shrink from the playstore.
-
Yes, this should be possible, and I've gotten requests about it before.
Can you clarify a few things (since I assume you've often used this feature before)?
- Do you get this prompt every time when attaching an image, or just for images above certain size (file size / pixel dimensions)?
- If the latter, is the threshold configurable?
- Is it possible to change the scaling afterwards? Or do you have to remove the attachment and add it back (choosing a different scale factor)?
-
- Do you get this prompt every time when attaching an image, or just for images above certain size (file size / pixel dimensions)?
In this case I can choose, if I want to get this prompt every time while attaching the image or if my choice should always remain the same.
- Is it possible to change the scaling afterwards? Or do you have to remove the attachment and add it back (choosing a different scale factor)?
In the stock e-mail agent, if I want to change the scaling afterwards, I need first to remove the attachment and than add it one more time choosing different scale factor.
-
Just think it over Kostya. What does one do with email client, they write and communicate. If e mail client provide facility to write better it help good quality communication, that is what Thunderbirds and outlook does for PC. So it is still a much better email client and not word processor, it is the perception of a customer (better email experience vs. Developer (word processor), any way at this point of time to me your product is best. But others are listening to their customers too :-)

Message threading - perspective....
Many people including myself have asked in various ways for message threading, or sorting by subject or sender.
I thought i would look at what was involved.
There may be better sources, but this article http://people.dsv.su.se/~jpalme/ietf/message-threading.html
is quite readable, but makes clear it may not be a straightforward matter, at least in 1998 that was the case.
Perhaps things have changed, but what i take from this is that it is not always a simple matter of chaining together message ids and "in reply to" s, as some clients put less useful info in these fields.
So whilst still urging kostya to bump this up the list, i recognise it is a non trivial extension.
I also wonder what is the implication of trying to display as a thread a conversation extending over time, such that the most recent message is loaded, some more message headers are loaded, and some messages are just on the imap server. A strategy for loading at least all the headers needs to exist.
My prediction is that this feature should come eventually, but i think we must be patient and understand the complexities. Thunderbird did not initially offer threaded view, supporting my inference that it is non trivial.
BTW, I would settle for threaded view using the message ids and in reply tos, but dont want the client to use message subject lines to guess at threads by matching them.
The latter can produce perverse results, and to work it has to consider not just subject, but subject, date, sender, recipient together. A sort of fuzzy logic problem!
Instead i would ask for a second function, the ability to SORT by subject, sender, or recipient, the equivalent of clicking in the column header in thunderbird. This is not threading or conversation mode, it is sorting (but again, there are implications for traffic between client and server ).
