Title: Big probem with battery usage
Post by: Alf on November 16, 2013, 06:26:01 pm
Hello all,

I am new to AquaMail.
The app is very good... I like it, but I have a big problem with the battery usage of the app.

I read in other posts that this problem is not new, but on my phone it seems to be extreme.

For example...
Yesterday at about 10 pm the battery shows about 83%. Then I go to bed leaving my phone (Galaxy SII) in standby mode. Today I try to check the battery (about 8 am in the morning), but the phone had turned off... with 0% battery!

After loading the phone I looked at the settings from AuqaMail. Nothing special... IMAP push was turned OFF and the intervall to sync my mails was set to 15 minutes (default). The number of mails per page is 25. I am using 3 IMAP accounts with NO folders except the inbox, sent, draft and trash folders.

What can I do?
With such a battery usage my phone is almost unusable.
Did I misconfigure AquaMail?

I cannot find any description of all the setting... is there any documentation which describes all of the parameters?

I hope you can help me setting up AquaMail correctly. It is the best mail app I have been used since I got my smartphone. But if the battery usage is such high, I can't use it anymore.

Regards,

Alf

Now I installed AquaMail on a second phone.
The battery has been reduced from about 80% to 3% overnight in standby!
I used the standard settings without IMAP Push with only one IMAP account.

Hello,

Sorry to hear this, certainly rare these days, although I don't question your experience.

Could you try it on the first phone again, let it work for a few hours, and then check system settings -> battery usage? That screen lists all battery consumers, apps among them, let's see if AquaMail is listed there with a high consumption level.

If it is, please enable debug logging (see my signature below) and leave it alone for a couple of hours, then sent me the log.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

yes... I will try it and give feedback.

I disabled the automatic sync for tonight and now everything was ok.
The battery level has been reduced from about 97% to 93%.
I did not change any other setting.

Alf

Hello,

yesterday evening I leave the phone with 100% in standby mode.
IMAP push activated for 1 account.
Today the battery shows 70% after about 6-7 hours.
For comparison... yesterday, without IMAP push, the phone uses only 4% instead of 30%.

The battery usage screen lists only 4 entries...
1. Android OS
2. Gerät auf Standby
3. Akku bei Standby
4. AquaMail

AquaMail uses 5%, Android OS uses  ~70%, each Standby ~10%.

I will try it again tonight with debugging turned on.

Regards,

Alf

Andorid OS at 70%? Are you sure that's my app?

Hi,

no... I'm not sure, but if I turn off IMAP push the overnight battery usage decreases from 30% to 4%.
And I can reproduce it on 2 different phones. Both running older Android versions (4.0 and 4.1)... not version 4.3 from the issues.

I can imagine something "calls" the OS which doesn't do that if IMAP push is turned off.
But it's only a suggestion.

Tonight I enable the debug logging. Perhaps this provides some new info.

Tonight the same... yesterday 11:00 pm 100% battery... today 7:00 am 68%.
AquaMail about 7%.

I sent you the debug log from tonight... hope that helps to analyse the problem.
