Title: High battery usage
Post by: dimaj on August 21, 2014, 09:47:26 am
Hello!

I have recently purchased the pro version of Aqua Mail and I saw that it is using up a lot of battery (Settings -> Battery shows 5%). After further investigation, I've discovered an application called WakeLock Detector. This app told me that Aqua Mail had 300 wakelocks in a 2 hour period. During this time, I have not been using my phone at all. All of the synchronization settings are at default values.
I have 3 email accounts: Gmail and 2 Exchange.

Based on my quick google search for Aqua Mail and Wakelocks, I saw that a lot of users are experiencing similar issues and I am assuming that you are working on a fix for that.

While that is happening, is there anything I can do on my end?

Thank you for your help and an amazing email client!

I have 3 accounts, 2 Gmail and 1 work, I know the app to monitor, I can inform you the Aquamail consumption is like a Fiat 500, but maybe Exchange is the reason, Kostya will replay with big experience on that...

Is there a reason you consider 4% -- with three email accounts -- "high"?

Should Aqua actually *charge* the battery as it runs?

I have limited knowledge how all those protocols work, so I do not know what is an acceptable power draw for 3 accounts.
That being said, I do consider 4% in 2.5 hours high... this is crappy math when it comes with power consumption, but it could potentially draw 40% in a 24 hour period.

I guess I'll do another test to see how much power is being drawn by gmail and native mail app for the same 3 accounts...

You're misunderstanding what 4% in system settings -> battery means.

It means that Aqua was responsible for 4% of battery charge used over the reported period -- *not* that AquaMail used 4% of total battery capacity.

On all my devices, the unquestioned leader is the screen.

If a phone has been just laying around, not used, then it's WiFi, "Phone idle" and "Cell standby". Oh, and "Android OS"

I also see from your screenshot that you've got at least 4 folders in push mode. This is quite a lot, I usually recommend push only for the INBOX folder and maybe 1-2 others.

IMAP IDLE (push mail) can be expensive, but don't take my word for it:

Given the circumstances, you're getting really low battery use by Aqua.

I'm also not sure that the "309" number, reported by your third party app, is correct.

BTW - why does Google Play Services -- keeping the CPU awake about 3X more and having 4X the number of wake locks -- not bother anyone? :)

Thank you for your replies and explanation guys! I really do appreciate it.

I will remove push from all folders except for Inbox.

Yes, I am also trying to figure out what the hell is "Android OS" doing to take so much resources. Believe it or not, but it is much better now... sometime last week, when my phone would not be used, it would get ridiculously hot.

Thanks again.
