Title: Does Aquamail support IMAP Notify yet?
Post by: peterg2 on May 26, 2013, 06:09:15 pm
Hi,

First of all, thanks for an outstanding app. After trying a whole slew of them I finally settled on Aquamail (Pro) and very happy with it.

Now to my question. I have been a customer of Rackspace for several years (previously Mailtrust and webmail.us) and I do know that Rackspace was one of the big supports of Dovecot (the developer for Dovecot, Timo Sirainen, was even an employee for a couple of years). With Dovecot 2.2 I know that Imap Notify was implemented and I am wondering if your app supports it.

What is the advantage of imap_idle_notify_interval over IMAP Push? I think the only one is less wakelocks on your phone. Correct me if i am wrong?

I am unable to give you URLs (site restriction) but the configuration you cite above, and P-IMAP, are not the same as IMAP Notify which is explained in RFC 5465. Put it this way, the IMAP notify extension is a more efficient way than simple IMAP IDLE in that it appears to operate like activesync in not requiring a connection for each folder which needs to be monitored.

It doesn't, and even though I know that Dovecot has it now, I won't be adding it until this extension is more widespread.

Yes, it's always the same "chicken and egg" story with those IMAP extensions that do cool things...

Thanks for your reply.

Subsequent to my initial posting, after a couple of chats with Rackspace I did find out that they are currently just using Dovecot 2.1. So, at the moment, it does not matter :)
