Title: How do I stop emails re-synchronising once I have deleted them?
Post by: zoeharris on December 09, 2013, 01:32:03 pm
I use Outlook on my laptop and a POP server feeding it my emails. I use gmail to synchronise with AquaMail on my Galaxy S3. I tend to keep a lot of emails on my laptop but delete them on my phone. Trouble is, they keep being re-sent across. It doesn't seem to happen consistently, but most days I end up re-deleting hundreds of emails off my phone. I have about 8 email accounts.

Can anyone tell me what I need to do to stop this?

You need to use IMAP on both sides in order to accomplish folder/message synch.  POP only goes one way.

For a POP3 account, you'll need to not only delete messages in AquaMail, but also purge the Deleted folder (long press and choose from popup, or enable an option in app settings -> mail, other for the app to do it automatically when closed with Back).

The reason is that POP3 doesn't provide access to server side folders, so moving a message to Deleted in AquaMail doesn't change anything on the server -- until you purge the Deleted, and then AquaMail deletes all those messages from the server.

Using IMAP is another solution, and actually, it has other benefits (access to folders, read state and starred state sync between devices, etc.)

I use IMAP exclusively on dovecot/cpanel and the only app that doesn't delete reliably from IMAP is Aquamail.

@tekops - are you same person as @zoeharris? providing more details?

Or is this a new, unrelated post?

Can you elaborate on what "doesn't delete reliably" means?
