Aquamail Pro 1.4.0.53 user here. I've got a few devices and AM works great on all of them (yey!) - Galaxy S4, Nexus 4, and Oneplus One.
I came here because I wanted to get rid of the push mail icon. I now understand what it is for, and I am fine leaving it. However, the real reason I wanted to get rid of the icon is that AM is taking up 2 icon spots. I'm one of those guys who essentially always has new mail, so I have both the new messages count and the IMAP push indicator. Is there a way to combined all functions into a single icon?
For example, this would be cool setup:
- Push "@" icon is black-and-white => IMAP Push Active but Zero Message
- Push "@" icon is color (of your choice) => IMAP has at least 1 new message
- Push "@" icon is color and has a number [count] over it => IMAP has [count] new messages
- BONUS: It would be awesome to set a sliding time window (let's say in minutes) so the number on the status bar indicates "number of new messages seen in [sliding window] time period." This is cool for people like me who know they have ~150 unread messages that are a month old and are much more interested in "how many messages did I get in the last 30 minutes?"

Interesting, but many users are currently using different icon colors to distinguish different accounts receiving new mails. What you are proposing is a regression for them.
Ok, I get you. Just to be clear I have two proposals. The one I care about *far more* is "when using Push, combine all indicators for a single account into a single status bar item." The second part about how to maybe use color to indicate new messages is just bonus points. =]

There is only one push icon -- so if there are multiple accounts with new / unread messages, then this will break.
I suggest you turn off the push icon in Aqua settings under "look and feel".
Should work fine without it -- the warning there is just in case.
