+ Android 7, "SSL hardening" turned on -> enable "Chacha / Poly" cipher (supported by Gmail).
+ Updated translations: CS, NL, SK, ZH, ES, HU, PT, SV, IT.
+ Slightly smaller "select to tap" area when both "contact images" and "checkboxes" are off.
+ Fixed: with "contact images" ON (default settings), expanded threads are supposed to have checkboxes, and they didn't
+ Small adjustments in message list: font sizes and "slim padding" when enabled
+ Now possible to turn off both contact images and checkboxes. Settings -> message list.
+ Pure black background for dark themes. Settings -> look and feel.
We intend to post this to Play "soon" but not "today".

+ Android 7, "усиленное шифрование" включено -> включается шифр "Chacha / Poly" (исп. Gmail).
+ Переводы: CS, NL, SK, ZH, ES, HU, PT, SV, IT.

Yes, the "expanded thread" checkbox is supposed to show when either 1) contact images are enabled or 2) contact images are off, but "show checkboxes" is on.
In other words, any time there is a visible UI element (either contact images or checkboxes) for selecting messages.
There is no separate setting for checkboxes on expanded threads only, nor are there any plans for it.

Kostya - quick question ...
I noticed that recent versions that I tried from 1.8.2-203 onwards - when checkboxes are turned off, you can still select (versus read) the message by touching the far left of the message header (versus long press) - not sure if this is by design or maybe related to when there was "tick marks" to the far left of the message? ...
There have been several occasions when I wanted to read the email and I "selected" it by mistake - to read it you have to avoid the far left edge of the email (and I am left handed ;-)
If this is by design, then I can live with it - but if not, then its worth it pointing out.
Cheers!

This was accidental, but so far I'm inclined to keep it - since it seem useful, an easier way to select than to long press.
-
Well - if your left handed it's actually a hindrance - long press is the intuative method across most apps in my experience.

Yes understand about left handed, but there was positive feedback from others (perhaps not left handed)... Maybe make the "tap area" smaller when contact images are off?

Yes, that would help I think, then it would be more of a "deliberate" selection far let ... thanks ...

OK, thanks

@b8drf - build 211 above.
Thanks, just tried build 211... how much smaller is the selection area to the left?

Re: Thanks, just tried build 211... how much smaller is the selection area to the left?
About 1/4 smaller.
-
build 214 has a bug fix for a rare combination of "pure black window background" + "custom unread message color".

Re: I was able to install this version OK - try to fully uninstall / re-install
Maybe you guys already have 1.9 (dev) installed?
Android won't let you "go backwards" without a full reinstall.
And then if you have 1.9 already, there is really no reason to install 1.8.
We've got three versions right now:
- 1.8.1 stable in Google Play
- 1.8.2 stable, not in Google Play yet, will go there soon: some fixes compared to 1.8.1
- 1.9.0 dev "work in progress", not in Play and won't be for a while: new features (Exchange contacts, more to come).

Kostya, sorry but I have tried to live with this unintended feature, but for me it is a productivity loss. I deal with hundreds of emails a day and am constantly "selecting" versus reading from email headers.
I would ask you to fix what is effectively a bug (or unintended feature) that was never in the original design.
If right handed users really want this feature, then they have the option in settings to long press on one header and then select anywhere on multiple headers.
If you don't agree, then there should at least be an option to toggle this "new" feature that has crept into the recent update.
Thanks.

Re: I would ask you to fix what is effectively a bug (or unintended feature) that was never in the original design.
The original design, for years, has been "if no contact images, then checkmarks", so the only recent change, in the "updated design" release 1.8 was "checkmarks -> checkboxes", purely visual.
The size of the "tap sensitive" area has been 60dp for years (for phones).
Turning checkmarks / checkboxes off completely was never possible before, now it is.
Re: If right handed users really want this feature, then they have the option in settings to long press on one header and then select anywhere on multiple headers.
The one who actually ran into it seemed happy with it.
I did reduce the size of the tap area by about 1/4. Reducing it further would essentially remove the behavior completely.
Re: If you don't agree, then there should at least be an option to toggle this "new" feature that has crept into the recent update.
Right now we're at "release candidate" stage with the 1.8.2 "stable hotfix" update, there will be no more translations in this cycle, and therefore, no new settings.
In the longer term, I feel that it would be better to just decide how it should be (i.e. only long press to select when checkboxes are off, or tap to select too) and not add yet another setting.

Agreed, and with the setting "Tap anywhere to select" I think we already have it covered.
If you want to select just one header, then just Longpress, if you want to select multiple, Longpress one and tap on multiple... why would you need anything more than that??
-
I am a right-handed person, but I frequently operate my phone and read e-mails with the left hand's thumb, while holding the phone in the left hand. I have the check marks shown (no contact images) (in the older version).
The check marks are not hindering my operation, quite the opposite: they are helpful.
Ability to choose the first message by a quick tap on the check mark makes it much faster and easier.
If there weren't possibility to keep the check marks (boxes) in the new version, I'd be insisting on keeping that "tap zone" active. But since one can still keep the check marks (boxes), - I am fine with either way: I'll just keep the check boxes turned on.
-
Hm, looks to me that:
- Previously the consensus was: "keep the tap / select area active even when checkboxes are off".
And now it is:
- "nah, don't need the tap / select area to be active when checkboxes are off".
Did I understand that right?

Thats about the size of it I think - especially as we have the settings option "Tap anywhere to select" which if set when checkboxes are off gives you the option to Longpress on one header and then tap on multiple... which I think is a good implementation and covers all bases ...

Um, ok, something to think about for 1.9 then.

Yes, I would say it would be a good step as it actually simplifies things, putting control in the users hands - and it will simpify your code slightly !

Could I request this gets added to the 1.9 list?
Many thanks. 1

I've already entered it into the task tracking system.
