How different are those two dialects?

Is a whole new translation necessary, or is it enough to *override* a few items from the Euro Portuguese translation?

For example, I have overrides for British English (the baseline is American English):

It's just a few items for "colour" / "color", "centre" / "center" (there are no occurrences of "flavor", "neighbor", "labor" anywhere.. yet).

Can we deal with pt-rBR the same way?

This may be a fluid situation (I do not speak Portuguese, btw), as there have been spelling reforms in Brazil that were supposed to go across the whole Luzophone world, including Portugal, but maybe they are still talking about it.
This news item may explain the background. Dates from 2009.

It looks possibly as though the spelling reforms in brazil are mostly to eliminate silent letters, so may closely follow the us/UK situation. If so, it may take over 200 years for Portugal to adopt Brazilian spelling!
Maybe it would be good if anyone in Brazil or Portugal can say if more than a spelling change (color/colour) is needed (English examples sidewalk(us)=pavement(UK); pavement(us)=carriageway or road(UK)) even though that just looks like "extreme spelling differences".

Good point about completely different words for same concept.

Still, if there are only a few of those, then they could also be handled as a list of exceptions, based on Euro Portuguese.

That's the main thing I'm trying to understand.

Far more people speak Brazil Portuguese than euro Portuguese, but only you know who has downloaded the most copies of your app! Good luck.

I wouldn't mind adding Brazilian Portuguese, but just trying to understand what it would entail. An all new translation, or a few exceptions here and there.

Hi,

I'm brazilian and I think there are big differences between brazilian portuguese (pt-br) and european portuguese (pt-pt).
In the samples in foward I'll put the expression in pt-pt -> pt-br

There are diffent  words like pantela or ecrã -> tela, actualizar -> atualizar, seleccionar -> selecionar.

Some phases are not incorrect but should be rewritten not sure it's a bad translation or if it's the way the write there, like Primeiramente com estrela -> Mensagens com estrela primeiro; Definições -> Configurações
In pt-br  there are some English words that could not be translated, they can be used on our day by day  (like mouse, print screen, design, Outdoor, Fashion, Delete, Notebook), I pt  there is a few words they doesn't translate. Sometimes it's hard to understand their translations.

Thank you.

It is possible in Android to override just some specific text items in a "dialect", relative to its base language.

I'm doing this for "English as spoken in Great Britain" (values-en-rGB) just for things like "colour", "neighbour", "flavour" etc.

Would you like to take a look at the Portuguese translation and try to improve, with 1) overrides for Brazil and 2) changes in the baseline Portuguese?
