Title: Messages stop displaying
Post by: smohl on January 24, 2015, 08:31:19 am
Hi,

First of all I love aquamail and have been using it successfully for a few years nowl.  :).  I have 1.5.1.13 and lately messages will display fine for a time but then simply not display anymore. I click on a message, it looks like it's loading but then the blue download line at the top completes and the screen is just white. The header shows along with all controls but the message is simply not showing. I have gs3 and connected to brighthouse pop3 server. The only recovery seems to be a phone reboot. It works for a time and then for no reason messages are blank again. It does not seem to make any difference whether I'm on wifi or network.  I've left a message on the screen for minutes thinking it's just a slow load to no avail.

Thanks very much.

Hi, thanks for the reply. To be honest as far as I know nothing has changed besides updates from aquamail, along with many others. I don't have SD, everything is stock. Same wifi, same provider, etc. The only thing I can think of is that I did recently run out of space for updates and had to remove some stuff but this was occurring before I really got tight on space. Updates are working fine again now.

I think I will uninstall/reinstall and see if it goes away. I will post an update after I do that.
Thanks.

Quick update, it started displaying messages again without a reboot. This is unusual but wanted to pass this along.

Please check the phone's System settings -> Accessibility and if you see:

LastPass, or any other password management apps, or anything like "Enhanced Security Privacy Protection Guard Pro Platinum Gold"

try disabling them and rebooting.

Hi,  I don't have any password protection apps but I do have Norton mobile security. Maybe the app verifier, which seems updated, is what's getting in the way. I Will turn it off and see.

Thanks.

Hi,

I have the same problem since some time (approx 1-2 weeks). When I open the app in the inbox view I see the list of all messages, but the user icons are not displayed instantly. When opening one mail right after opening the app the mail ist empty and I need to wait for about 1 minute for the mail to be displayed. When I stay in the inbox for one minute and wait until user's icons/avatars are loaded I can open those messages and see the header and body instantly.

When I go back from a not-loaded message to the mail list the list is completely empty. I need to close and reopen the app to see the mail list (inbox) with content again.

I already deleted and reinstalled the app. Doing a reboot does not change the not-loading behaviour, the only workaround is to wait for some time for the mail to be loaded.

Thank you for this great app,
    Arne

@ap - what's the device and Android version?

I've been seeing it on my LG G3 after it got the 5.0 update:

The lookup of contacts by email (in the system contacts storage) got about 10 or more *times* slower, compared to before and a Nexus 5 with 5.0 (about 1 second vs. 50-100ms) -- so the "data loading" threads get stuck.

I made some changes which make it much better, but not ready to post them yet (it's intertwined with the new calendar stuff)....

If that's your device, please try turning off contact images in the message list (app settings -> message list).

And in any case, please also try Menu -> "Compact the database" in the app's main window.

Hi,

I am using Android 4.4.4 (Cyanogenmod), Samsung S4 Mini (GT-I9195)

I think I found the error: my address app was syncing somewhat strange. It synced my contacts over and over again, so it were in total 150mb of concacts (for about 100 telephone numbers?!). I think this is the reason why opening the inbox took so long: AquaMail tried to find the contact in the too large address book, this slowed down the app (and the phone) completely.

I deleted the contacts app's 150mb cache+data and tadaaa: AquaMail is faaaast as before and the address app is not eating battery power as before.

Thank you very much!

Yep, syncing contacts can be slow, esp. with all the stuff it collects from Google+... I see it every time when setting up a new device... And sounds like on your phone, it got into some kind of endless loop.

Glad to hear it's back to normal now :)

I don't think the problem I described had anything to do with contacts. After having turned off Norton app advisor the problem has gone away.

Remember Kostya's first response?

Please check the phone's System settings -> Accessibility and if you see:

LastPass, or any other password management apps, or anything like "Enhanced Security Privacy Protection Guard Pro Platinum Gold"

try disabling them and rebooting.

Once again Kostya hits the bull's eye.

>> Remember Kostya's first response

Maybe I should first post a dozen responses like "Thank you for your feedback, your opinion is very important to us" --

-- and only then get to I actually have to say (or just close discussions with "not resolved in ten iterations" -- must be "Obsolete").

:)

( joking )

Darn! I could close bugs as "Obsolete" then!

On my Samsung Notetab Pro SM-P900 the same thing ahppens. This started about 2.5 weeks ago.
A switch off/on cycle fixes it again.

Anything I can do to help?

@tsiebold:

Android version? My 8.4" version is at 4.4

Have you already checked system settings -> accessibility and turned off everything there?

My version is 4.4.2 and I believe I have checked the Accessability thing.
Unfortunately I am running my Tab in German, so I am really unsure what area accessability is in.
I xlated it, but I did not find an area that comes close.

BTW I have changed no setting between before and after this happened.

> running my Tab in German

You could temporarily switch it to English...

No problem, I switched mine to German. It's Gerat -> Enigabehilfe -> scroll down to Dienste (last item).

Known culprits: LastPass, 1Pass, Norton-something-or-other-Gold-Pro-Platinum, but could be anything really.

Are there any apps listed under Accessibility?

LastPass, 1st Pass, Norton?

Do you use any "privacy protection" apps?

What if you close a message that did display -- and then reopen it, the same one? Does it display?

Please try turning off Norton mobile in accessibility settings, maybe just as a test (I don't think anything bad will happen in 5 or 10 minutes).

And it made no difference? I.e. still getting blank messages?

Oh I am sorry,  I did not phrase this correctly.

It is working since switching off Norton Mobile App Consultant!

Any idea when I can use it again?

First, please try the latest development build from the forum here:

http://www.aqua-mail.com/forum/index.php?board=9.0

1.5.1.16.17 or later (1.5.1.16.15 had a change in how HTML content is prepared for displaying).

Other than that, sorry, I don't have any ideas.

From my point of view, the presence of those apps (LastPass, 1Password, Norton) that "get into" other apps using Android's accessibility functions -- breaks something inside Android WebView, which is a system level component for displaying HTML (you can think of it as Chrome browser, or more exactly, Chromium, inside an application).

It's also difficult to reproduce -- for some users it seems to happen pretty consistently (quite few users, it seems) -- but I wasn't able to make it happen.

Why it breaks and what to do to prevent it -- no idea, really. I already had a discussion with the lead developer of LastPass, which ended up nowhere, he seems to think it's a bug in Android / WebView itself, and that's where it ended.

For  what ever it is worth,  i switched on Norton  Mobile again.
And AquaMail started to mis-behave again.
So Norton is off again. :-)

Just want to point out something fairly obvious, but --

AquaMail does not cause any trouble in Norton or LastPass or 1Pass.

Norton and LastPass and 1Pass *may* (on some devices, for some users... not on my phones, unfortunately) -- break AquaMail, and, based on Play comments under LastPass, other apps as well.

Based on the above, it has to be fixed in Norton / LastPass / 1Pass / Android itself (haha, good luck, Mr. Gorsky) -- but I'm afraid all those fine developers just don't give a rat's ass about breaking other apps.
