Tip - Conversation combining and Gmail
« on: February 01, 2016, 12:54:23 am »
A quick tip for Gmail users who have enabled 'Conversation combining'.

If you find some conversations appear be missing emails (especially as they age) look into the following settings:
- Across folders sub-option reflects your personal preference
- Messages to sync (under account options) is set to a time period vs message count

The latter suggestion insures all eligible messages within a specific time period are considered for inclusion in a 'conversation'. Also makes it easier to identify why a message may have been excluded from a conversation (ie: falls outside the sync date range).

One can accomplish the same thing by setting Messages to Sync higher than the default value. The optimal value will vary based on mail volume. I personally find a finite number of days easier to deal with.

I believe Messages to cache also plays into the equation, but only for items older than the sync interval (or message totals exceeding the sync value). For me it is irrelevant as I am only interested in retaining messages within the sync window. It's easy to load additional message blocks or search as needed.
