Hi all,
Fiddled with all possible settings but I can't get notifications to work. They come through on ambient display and lock screen and the notification sounds but actual notification doesn't drop down over other apps

You mean "Priority notifications"? From choosen senders?
Then you will find the corresponding option in Aqua Mail settings :)

You mean for notifications to look like this specifically?

Yes that's in app settings -> message notifications -> priority
( and it has nothing to do with "priority senders" feature )

@Kostya,
I can't find the "priority" option in Settings / Message notifications, as mentioned by you.
-> See screenshot
Android 8.0.0
AquaMail 1.18.0-1357-dev

On Android 8.0 - in 1.18.0-dev - notification appearance settings are now in Phone Settings -> Apps and Notifications, and you can get there from Aqua Mail Settings -> Message Notifications -> Manage notifications (appearance)
This includes "importance" where the highest option - "urgent" - automatically enables "pop out on the screen".

Thanks for your explanation, Kostya!
Could be helpful for the OP...
