Maybe not just related to the Android version, but also to the screen size? The screen on Samsung Galaxy y is just 240×320 pixels.

Not seeing this issue on my S5830 with 2.3.6, or the 2.3 emulator, I ran to the shopping mall and purchased a Galaxy Y (S5360, firmware XXLK3, 2.3.7).

Not seeing the issue on this device either.

Tried full screen mode, fade out, no fade out, old build, new build, messages with and without attachments -- it all works just fine for me.

I don't question the report, or the videos (from an HTC Desire), but --- does this all mean I'm going crazy?

Hahaha, you r funny :-)
This all means it's some weird bug, maybe it's some combination of different settings or so... But man, thx for the effort, u went and bought a phone!
Do you have some debugged version of aqua, if u have ill gladly install it so u can closely see what is happening? And than send u the log....?
Don't know how else you can investigate this further, it's always a problem when it's hard to replicate the bug... ;-)

Ok, here is a new build:

http://www.aqua-mail.com/download/AquaMail-market-1.2.2.7.apk

I only changed a few things that are not related to this issue... and not seeing it on my 2.3 devices still, including an HTC Desire S with 2.3 which I borrowed.

Please let me know if there is still missing text.

Or maybe it's not the device, maybe it's the messages?

@Dan12345, or @jmccabe, does this happen with all messages? Could you download a couple from web mail or your desktop mail app (into .txt or .eml files) and send as attachments to kmansoft / at sign / gmail / dot com?

Kostya,

For me it's not all messages.  I've just had a notification from the spammers thread that looks wrong but also one from this thread that looks fine. I'll forward the odd one later from Thunderbird as an attachment.

Hi Kostya,

I just sent you emails as attachments. Now I'll try new version.
I tried new 1227. Same as 1225. The last vorking version for me is 1212,I think it is the last that has no fading attachments feature...

Just tried the latest version and no text or attachments show unless I turn the fading feature back on. Then, as with 1221, messages with attachments work fine, as the text fades in, messages without attachments do not. Behaviour is the same for both plain text and html messages. Does not seem to be related to message length either. Changed a few display settings in Aqua-mail, still no change.

If I get the chance,  I will try further fiddling with the settings later today, to see if there is something conflicting.

exactly the same behaviour as on my desire. now we only have to see what is some specific thing that we have on our devices, that creates this bug ;) :) :D

Well, changing various settings (20 minutes of changing and testing), nothing solved the message display problem. But I did make a few observations that may or may not help.
1) On a message with attachments, if I swipe from right to left once, the message body disappears, the panels pager appears then fades out as the list of attachments fades in. If I swipe right to left again, the list of attachments disappears, the pager reappears, then fades out again as the list of attachments fades in again.
2) On a message with attachments, swiping left to right several times has the same effect, but on the message body rather than the attachments list.
3) On a message without attachments, the message body (not initially visible) fades in if I swipe either right to left or left to right. If I swipe again (in either direction), the text disappears then fades back in again.
4) As observed by Dan12345, if I turn off the option to fade the pager, messages with attachments do not display either text or attachments list, just the pager.

It all gives the impression that the trigger for the text fading in is the pager completely fading out and, because there is no pager on a message without attachments, it never gets that trigger to fade in.

Might it be worth trying adding an additional option, to not display the pager at all (but still be able to swipe to see the attachments list)? Or maybe have an option to force initial display of the pager even if there are no attachments?

After two days of pulling my hair out (good thing I still have a lot of it, even though I'm an old man):

Finally, I was able to reproduce this today, using a specific device (LG P500) with a specific custom firmware ("Infusion 1.5", Android 2.3.7).

A different custom firmware on the same device, which I orignally had there, also 2.3.7, does not trigger this issue.

I am working on a fix right now.

Looks like -- there was a bug in Android around the 2.3.3 time frame (two years ago), which made its way into certain custom firmwares, and even into some official ones (I had one email report from a user with a fairly modern phone, I'm sure that runs 4.* from the manufacturer).

Not one of my devices (and emulators) with 2.1, 2.3.3, 2.3.7, 4.0.4, 4.1.1, 4.2.2 has this issue.

Woooow, great news Kostya!!!! Bravo, cant wait for the new build!
Sorry for hair loss. At least, baldness has some advantages as well. :-)
Who would say that it would be some generic 2.3.x bug.... ;-) but important thing is that you found it!! :-)

I'm not going bald, still have a lot of hair left. Just very painful, is all. Nothing a few shots of cognac can't fix.

Yes, an Android bug right in front of me in the debugger (would you believe it? there are only 47 thousand of them in the official Android bug tracker).

Some piece of code got picked into Cyanogen and other firmwares at a bad time, it looks like.

Agreed, very good work. I hope you are lucky enough to keep clear of the other 46,999 bugs in future releases.  :)

Ok, folks, please try this out:

@Dan12345: Don't like vodka much....

@komadori: I once asked on @android-developers if I was "special", hitting so many bugs, and Romain Guy (who works on Android's UI and graphics systems) said -- "yes, you are" :)
